data centers don’t care much about single core performance. its all about total cost of ownership.Nvidia is not chasing fastest single core from the very beginning, unless that changed in recent times I don't think they can even touch Intel/Apple CPU market. AMD maybe yes..
you have to understand block and stream compression algorithms and you will see that its is not easy to parallelize compression. zlib finds all the unique blocks and replaces them with indexes. like how color palettes work in gif/png files.One interesting thing i always had is why is no one attempting to create a program for file compression using GPU.
