Help with this XBOX 360

I got this from a friend but given I am a noob when it comes to consoles and last one being used was over a decade ago.
can you guys please tell me if this is worth any usage ?
how to connect the joystick/controller to the console ? I dont see any port that matches the cable end or any adaptor is needed ?
is it worth anything and worth putting in money ?
its probably a 06-07 xbox i believe and has RCA out. I don't see any HDMI connectivity as such.

what are my options ? worth investing time into it for any usage ?
I have a 4 year old. Will it be of any use to him if not now but in near future or shall I just junk it off ?

The controller connector is weird. The xbox guide just say plug in the wired controller to one of the front USB ports, which indicates that the controller should have a USB male connector. Regarding connecting it to your TV, your TV should have a RCA or a VGA port.. You can use any of the two to send video out to the TV. RCA will also carry audio. For VGA, you can use SPDIF from xbox to your home theatre receiver.

You are the best judge. Do you own a lot of XBOX 360 games that you want to play still?

The "weird" part of the connector is for use with the OG Xbox. There should be an additional cable that converts it to USB, which might be missing in your case. Just turn on the console and see if it is working.

From the looks, it seems to be one of the first iterations. These were infamous for the red ring of death i.e. console overheats and causes permanent warpage of the motherboard.

I personally would just use it as is and not invest anything more than 1K as it as very old platform.

found the cable connector.
its called a USB Breakaway cable connector. costs some 300 bucks. will order one and see.
meanwhile do we get compatible games for these ?

The controller has a dongle. It is a safety feature so that xbox wont get pulled/fall if someone trips on cable. It has saved my xbox a couple of times. The xbox 360 is 720p/1080p capable. I would get a used ORIGINAL microsoft component cable for video. Still looks great on 32 or 40 inches screen.

That xbox is probably a xenon (check power adapter plug and wattage, google is your friend). Has no wifi only ethernet. Best for JTAG, worst for rrod. As its not used for a long time, it will probably need service and be on old software. DON'T update if you want to JTAG.

The kinect is available for cheap (olx etc) but you'll also have to buy a separate power cable for it to be able to work with that specific box.

I would suggest getting it Jtag'ed and serviced (last I remember this costed 2-3k). As its an old console this might be a lot harder than it seems (finding the right guy/shop or even someone willing to work on it). I also have a xenon in my cupboard to jtag someday myself (don't possess the skills now but can dream) but also have many other consoles.

Even if it works for 6 months it will be a great experience. Use it till it dies. Original games are available easily and cheap (olx, forums, etc). The games you have now are really good but not for a kid. My son is about to be 7 and he especially had a great time throughout lockdown and still does with the xbox 360 kinect and nintendo wii.

So to sum it up
1. Do you have component input. If not, stop right here, its not worth it.
2. Would you spend more on kinect, power cable and games (kinect adventures, kinect sports and fruit ninja kinect) IMHO this holds up well today and extremely fun with the family. You will need quite a bit of space for this.
3. Lots of games are backward compatible with the newer consoles (xbox one and xbox series). So you can carry over those games if/when you upgrade.
4. JTAG - to get the most out of the system. Media player, emulation, homebrew, any internal hard drive, etc.

For JTAG you will have to decide now, so that you don't update. Most of the games will not be playable till you update. There's bunch of youtube videos on JTAG and its use.

Remember this particular xbox 360 is a ticking time bomb. I would not buy it to day but you can't argue with free. Can fail anytime, if that concerns you, should give it away to someone who can JTAG while its still working.

Yes have components in and have space as well. Will turn it on and test, if it boots ordering the USB breakaway cable and the from there work on JTAG as you suggested.

+1 to everything @MrB said. It's indeed a setup to save xbox from falling off if the cable is pulled.

Now i am not a fan or JTAG. Things can easily get messy and even doing it should be done by a professional guy only. There are several micro soldering to be done and even one single wrong solder can ruin the whole console.

Also you can use a Xbox 360VGA cable to make use of old screens.

Better to enjoy the console as it is. There are several games that can be played on it. Games are cheap. But do give it a through clean up. You don't want to get RROD.

OP - I forgot to mention that the xbox 360 is region locked. You will have to buy games of its region or region free. There should be lists online for which games are region free.

Also noticed all your fancy gear behind the box. The first gen xbox 360 doesn't have digital audio out built in the console. The original microsoft 360 component cable will have an optical out port in it's case. Most if not all games are dolby digital. I myself have never used the vga cable so can't comment on that.

@joy.das.jd - I myself have not modded, RGH3ed or jtaged any 360 so far. The xenons with low firmware are only good for this today. OP will have to get it serviced sooner than later and re thermal it, this would be the best if not only time to go with JTAG. Hardmodding used to be really complicated before youtube. Now people with even ok soldering skills (not that I am one of them) can do these things with no console/gaming knowledge required and parts needed are really cheap (just a few diodes and wires). Just need someone/friend with good soldering skills that can follow instructions and you're done. That said, you are right, there is still a high chance of failure and if you don't know what you're doing, these things should be left alone. Enjoy as is.

Have three of them (xenon, trinity and corona), two have been replaced with xbox one s, x and the third (corona) used with kinect for my son. So two consoles are lying idle waiting to be modded (xenox with jtag and trinity with rgh3). I want to do this just because I can and for the experience. The search for the right person in Delhi is on.

I did hard mod a console once (it was a Trinity i guess) and the experience was not so good. The thing worked fine and all. But that soldering was nightmare.

These days i don't do the soldering myself. I simply ask one of my known mobile repair guy to do it for me. They have tons of experience doing tiny soldering here and there. He gets paid and i get my work done. Win win for all.

I can do it for you. But either you will have to buy some stuffs. Or i will have to arrange them. Lol.

I guess it's a pain to arrange those miniature boards. Coolrunner or something like that. These things won't come cheap brother. If you can pay for those then i will love to do it.

This is a recently updated chipless mod. Beyond wires and 10k resistors, only a raspberry pico (instead of jrunner) is required for RGH3. This is a project I wanted to do for some time now. I have thermal paste and a 1tb hdd, will need to buy a xbox 360 hd caddy, new rubber for the dvd drive (open close issue), x clamp tool and raspberry pico. I understand things can go wrong and willing to take risk whole heartedly.

Note - This is specifically for a trinity xbox 360 slim. The corona xbox 360 slim requires more parts/steps and is a different video.

This is a super easy one. Yeah this can be done easily. And we dont need the X clamp tool anyway. A good old tester is fine for opening X clamp. I have used it numerous times on xbox one. Works without any fuss.

Raspberry pico should be fairly cheap. Yeah. This is definitely one of the better method for RGH3.

Probably within 1-1.5k.

And if it's a Trinity console then perhaps even less. But there is inherently some risk involved while soldering such small parts and hacking. You have to take that into consideration.
