Once Steam deck or other hand helds compete 'directly', i.e. in terms of price and portability, Nintendo is not going to update it's console as there really is no incentive for the company to do so. Hardware is only part of the console, the software would also need a huge overhaul especially if moving to another platform. While more headroom would be great, nintendo doesn't really care as long as units / games are sold.

any changes in hardware, even it is a stubble in nature would mean amendment to production line process, change in BOM(bill of material), change in hardware based intrinsic factors, etc. etc. it's fine when you see these changes from few units perspective, but when you calculate for 3K-5K units, the additional cost could be substantial i.e in millions of $. Nintendo was careful to revise switch in terms of OLED, and few non-prominent features for the new switch version. They knew that these changes won't impact their expenditure forecasting, and these will run most of the switch exclusives at cost of certain graphical compromises, occasional glitches which the users won't mind much.
Switch hardware has aged worser than any 2-3 Years old anroid phone.. even a 2019 adreno GPU is more capable than a switch Tegra.. What makes it score well is the game optimizations.. Nintendo's devs are excellent in these.. you may see witcher 3 arrived to switch, which literally was not possible considering hardware limitations of switch. people were happy playing Witcher 3 in switch, and these racked more unit sales.. They didn't mind the graphical let-down when compared with switch vs pc vs ps4/xbox versions.
With the influx of recent handheld consoles in market, Nintendo will be careful to launch their new version.. what if it fails? I assume all the new handheld like steam deck, ayaneo etc, are also reaching Japanese market.. It will be interesting to see on what costumers will decide between the next gen switch or third party handheld consoles in near future? They may get both, or they might stick to handheld where you can emulate switch and do much more..
Nevertheless, the prevailing reputation for nintendo in Japan is quite good and they know that their fan base won't be fading away any time soon. Whatever get's them money and maintain their monopoly in the market is what they will follow as for now. They don't care on what else is going outside of japan and what are the needs..

The problem is that the last major release i.e Poke Sc Vio has been a shoddy release technically atleast. It remains to be seen for how much longer, Nintendo's audiences will ignore the severely underpowered hardware and the sub par performances (technically) various games on the systems have (alteast in recent times).
PS- You talked about the Witcher 3's port. That is a good port, but we need to realize that the game came out in 2019-2020. 3 years have passed since.
PPS- I believe a new console iteration will hit us in late 2024. let's see.

Still cannot bring myself to sell my old Nintendo ds lite even after putting it on TP. Literally sold it also but retained it.
I own PS4, Xbox series s , Nintendo switch and gaming laptop yet much of my time is spent on Nintendo consoles.
Even if Nintendo brings new system anytime soon it might still be less powerful than current gen specs.
They don't want too high end hardware. Their games don't even need that kind of specs as they mostly focus on gameplay. Than graphics.

This. Exactly. I've a 3DS as well to enjoy some old Mario games (specially Mario RPG).
All this whining on Nintendo if kinda useless. They're doing good, great sales for HW/SW. If someone doesn't like what they're selling, get a PS5 or XSX. No point finger pointing at "fans" who lap it up.
It's kind of true.. there are players who owns Nintendo consoles and they are happy with it.. few owes PS5/Xbox and they are fine with that.. it just whichever works good for individuals... I have no hardthoughts about switch or Nintendo.. just few of the things which i have shared.. i still, am keeping the old Nintendo cartridge system which my father gifted me some 22 yrs back.. i used to play mario with him during weekends.. he is no more with us now. This console is a pure nostalgia and sweet rememberance of the time which I had spent with him.. Indeed, I do play NES games occassionally even now, which i still enjoy as way back then.
