It depends who issued you that .in domain. I think, bigrock sends you an OTP to verify your phone number.

And unless things are different now, Indian govt doesn't allow Whois privacy.

I was replying to the spaceship post as that is what I use. They also redact all details listed on WhoIs.
 
I have a .co.in domain with Rediff. They did not ask any KYC documents though. The domain name was bought using a credit card and the whois showed my real name, e-mail and home address for a while before getting redacted. Ofcourse the replaced my phone numbers with theirs to prevent transfer of domains.
Renewal of the domain is now done using UPI.

Do check them out as well. You can get someone across on a phone if you leave a callback message.
 
Cannot recommend spaceship enough.

I have a .dev domain through them and they never asked for any KYC. Whois was also redacted automatically. Best part, they are affordable af.

Excellent customer service too.
I changed my mind on a TLD I bought (within their cancellation timeline) and they refunded me the whole amount no questions asked, even though my purchase was technically non-refundable (promotional pricing).
Gave me a special discount as well for the new puchase because the previous coupon didn't work anymore.
