    i've been using external hard drive to backup system and important data. It is easy to carry, and safer than internal hard drive. RAID 1 also can do the job, but i think it is a waste of space. Never tried any network drive or online backup.

    i'm afraid u can not clone a disk to a smaller one using sector level clone. clone disk by file level might work for that. as long as the used space on the 80gb disk is smaller than 40gb, it can be cloned to the smaller disk, while the data on the 40gb disk will be overwritten. here's a disk...

    i have used easus disk copy, too. it is great, but it is sector level disk copy, which would be so slow. their easus backup also offers disk clone by file level, much faster. and it is also free.

    i dont recommend windows backup utility, not comprehensive enough. if u have xp, 7, or vista system, there are many free utilities out there. if u got server system u might have to pay for a backup tool. drive backup, true image, and todo backup are all good backup tools. i've tried them...
