At this point of time I wouldn't buy anything less than a 1950Pro which retails around 13-14k, a 7600GT just doesn't cut enough in the new games. Anyway a 7600GT should cost about 8-9k, XFX is actually your best bet and it shouldn't be that expensive either.

In future apps one can expect a C2D E6300 to perform by atleast 20-50% over a X2 3800, plus C2Ds are much more overclockable. On the technical front C2Ds have more cache, 65nm and most of all SSE 4 which has about 50 new extensions! Games like Vegas and Double Agent already struggle with X2s...
