Account demoted

Another misuse of today's rule change (no moderation after 5 posts).

I need that kind of confidence in my life.

That is posting = activity is a poor metric of analysing engagement. Viewing and reacting are also engagement.
With all due respect, no it's not.

This definition of "engagement" is called a lurker.

By that analogy, recording someone in distress on the road with your phone for Instagram reels = getting involved and doing something about it.

Keeping Patron bypasses aside, you haven't contributed to the forum in any meaningful way in almost nine years. I can be 70 years old and brag about having loads of life experience, but in reality, I've never even left the confines of my neighborhood or had a job. Age doesn't equate to respect, at all.

This may not be true, but you seem to sound salty just because your account is 8 years old and demoted.

I don't think saying that marketplace is a fringe part of the forum is correct. There are only 2 direct links on the website in the header and both of them lead to the marketplace:

Marketplace is the reason that I came here. I am sure many of us started like this.

Most of the scams in the recent times have been done by patrons. Moreover, they have a red tagline which makes them seem more official than anyone else on this forum including the mods. So, I don't really understand the logic behind patrons other than making money for running the forum (which is obviously very difficult with all the adblockers, etc.)

Until very recently, new members were invited to the marketplace in the welcoming email they recieved upon sign up.

I'm guessing sometime in the last 20 years, focus shifted away from the marketplace but the measures put in place to promote the marketplace hadn't been updated.

I myself lurked for a year, with my only interest being the marketplace. Then I saw that the crowd here was much different than what I'd meet outside and started taking part in the discussions.

Fringe is an exaggeration of course, it's more of an appendage.

I would love to be able to support the forum without the red badge or Patron label. Maybe make it pink or orange. Or twitter blue.

@renegade @Crazy_Eddy, thank you for finding a middle ground. You guys are solid. <3

I understand that the debate is multifaceted and it is easy to sketch the other in villainy. But I stick with everything I said. My “lurking” (limited activity) in the general section but activity in “marketplace” is somehow unacceptable to some. So be it.

I have been a gentle user of forums from the day I got on the internet. I will try to be happy with that.

Query to mods/admins
There is a Do you have XYZ credit card topic where I asked something. and now i see that i cant reply there anymore. insufficient privileges or something. reason please?

I think newbies who buy Patron only for marketplace should only be allowed to buy from marketplace (means they can post in the section but can't create a sale thread) and sell privilege will be unlocked if they make 5 buy deals. This is how forum can still make money and avoid scammers
@Crazy_Eddy @Renegade this is a pretty solid idea, ensuring both security (to an extent) and revenue.

This could always be circumnavigated by them making 5 small purchases of say 100 rs each and then making off with 50k in scam money.
I am a staunch supporter of escrow system but that would put insane strain on the enforcers.

These 5 purchases are not easy to make and all the hassle that one has to go to reach to that to scam someone can prove too much. Scammers scam for quick money, if we introduce delay, we deter scams as the scammers tend to move away to some other grifting avenue.

Apart from difficulty of building and maintaining an escrow service, scammers scam in escrow system too. Have seen this happen in PayPal based transactions. They exploit blindspots, like claiming faulty product delivered, product missing, etc. Nothing is foolproof.

“Good people do not need laws to tell them to act responsibly, while bad people will find a way around the laws” – Plato

Security and convenience usually have a conflictual relationship. Too much security causes too much inconvenience. A threshold which balances security with convenience is essential.

Not necessarily and I recall seeing something like that happen here as well. Fly by night stuff where a few initial low value successful deals to build trust is followed by the bigger scam.
The reason why the Mktplace here has comparatively less scams is only because of the controls and detterents in place. Not everyone has to like it but it is absolutely worth it. Plus there is so much one can do within the limits of this forum platform as highlighted by one of the Mods earlier.
