Narayana Murthy Explains Why He Wants 70-Hour Workweek, Again
Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy has defended his 70-hour workweek comment, again. He said young people have to realise that "we have to work hard and work towards making India number one"

Only if somebody could help him shut up on this issue, again...

Why you guys feel so offended by what he is saying ?
I mean if you dont like it, dont listen but asking to shut up, etc for what?
He is neither forcing you to work, neither he is hiring you, so take a chill pill and enjoy your life !!!

People like him can probably influence policy. He also has a vested interest in getting dirt cheap labor.
Not everyone wants to work like a slave, this will have health consequences too.
You don't have to work 70 hours to be productive and india has a lot of people. Generally i have heard that working medium hours is more productive than working too much.
Ofc, we can have sprints from time to time, that is different.

Will he ask his children to work 70+ hours for no overtime and low pay in name of nation building ?
Why not donate all of his shares and most of the wealth for nation building too if he expects others to sacrifice their time and health with low pay ?

You're wrong my friend, people like him have lots of influence on industry.

Why do you feel the need to defend a billionaire who doesn't even know you exist?

India would have been closer to number one if the top tier of society actually invested in the nation rather than in buying property and going on vacations abroad. In the US their wealthy class created universities, hospitals, and other public institutions with their wealth. Very few of their top universities are state owned/run. In India we are still asking why IITs are not in top 100, if 20 more institutes like BITS had been created, no doubt few of them would have been in top 100 and no one would get to whine about reservations either.

We don't give a rat's ass about what he says on a personal level.

It just sets a dangerous precedent by influencing other CEOs to think it's okay to exploit talent because "Murthy-ji said so."

Case in point: the pretentious, hypocritical troll known as Bhavish Aggarwal.

Comments when schooling goes wrong! Have you heard Modiji asking people work for 16-18 hrs a day which he himself does it? why, because he knows his words will have a greater impact. Use your brain bro, a renowned public figure wants to ask people to work 70hrs but not a single word altered about pay increase or fair compensation. why the hell one work 30 hrs more with same pay? also why are you offended?
If one says they will compensate for 70 hrs, then only I want to hear such utter nonsense in a public platform by such figures, else go and tell to your kids is what I have to say to such people.

Indeed, a lot of the startups have an ingrained exploitative culture based on the "words of wisdom" of those who made it before. Mind you the extra exploitation is aimed primarily at increasing the company value which benefits the founder/CEO tremendously more than it impacts an every day employee's life.

Case in point is a 22-year old born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

It usually doesn't take a whole lot to mix compassion with growth but most of these people are successful only because they are psychopaths.

Mr. Murthy had a spouse like Mrs. Sudha Murthy (who I admire very much) who managed the household while he was slaving away 70 hours a week to build a company. Spouses like her are exceptions than a norm. So, no, I don't think everyone should work 70 hours a week and put their lives, family and health at risk. That is a just short-sightedness. I was a workaholic (and still am to some extent) when I got married at 25, and I regret not spending more time in those early years creating memories and building a better life.

Carpenters of Rajasthan (it's probably a cultural thing) origin work 84 hours per week. That's 9am to 9pm every day of the week. They take a day off only on the day of the new moon. They are ideal employees for Narayan Murthy.

People working this long have exceptionally low productivity. A lot of professional time is wasted doing personal activity like talking on the phone, gossiping, watching YT shorts etc. Not to mention, they don't live that long. Their contractors work them like animals, zero regard for their health.

Conveniently skipping topic of fair remuneration . His company was one of the top bodyshoppers of their time . His daughter has left India. Should keep the morality lecture to himself. At this point, he's just being stubborn and in a false persona sticking to what he has said.

Have no sympathy for him. Rather angry, because the daily struggles of a common person are continuously elevating; taking a toll on their personal and mental health. We already have a toxic work culture in general. And these kind of statements will aggravate the same.

We rant about such CEO's being senile etc but if you look at their long term plan, these crafty guys are usually making such comments to make it look like working /slaving for companies like other Asian countries is normal. They will soon ask for Unions to be abolished and probably ask for 24 hour uptime from the govt. Only some companies work 24/7/365 right now, but when these guys start bribing the correct pockets, it will become normal for all companies/ shops etc to work 24/7.

IMO this is long term plan for normalizing wide scale automation. It is obvious that 70 hrs work week is not achievable. So next best bet is robots. With Gen AI, even coding skills are no longer safe. He's just building narrative.

No need for narrative, every technological leap is inevitably followed by tech replacing humans.

One key aspect of people who suggest this kind of work hours is that their risk to reward mentlity is based on trickle down. you slog, i reward the top layer, who are then responsible for making the rest of the org slog with rewards flowing down in lower increments. This can be authenticated by looking at any of the Indian listed orgs.

The exception is the early movers like the Infosys, wipro, etc where they did award all layers till they became bigger and process oriented. Thankfully, the current generation (post 2020) batch that has come into the indian workforce seems to willing to push back more heavily.

one think i will call out is considering our current economic situation (Please dont read this statement as against or for any party) and taxation levels (disclaimer as per previous bracketed statement) we seem to have to work longer everyday.

If that becomes reality, most kids graduating out of college won't get a job. Really grim future for kids in next 15+ years. Maybe we will become no.1 in unemployment in world.

You are half right. This is a long term plan. Not for automation though.

Its to weaken labor protection laws (what little there are as it is) in the name of "national progress". They will keep saying this until this is considered normal.
