News Gemini's new model will use your search history

Google is working on a new Gemini model called "Personalization" that will use your search history for better personalization. This has been revealed today through a teardown of the latest beta of the Google app.

It appears to be opt-in, at least initially, and if you do go for it, it promises to offer "personalized help based on your Google Search history". Google stresses that only this particular model will be connected to your Search history if you allow it.

I don't really get why someone would choose go for this model and deliberately provide an AI access to their search which will most probably be used to train it on.

I mean, if you use Chrome while logged into Google, it makes sense - they already have access to that data and use it to target ads and tune their algorithms anyway, why not benefit from it?

The real problem wouldn't be the data being used to train a model, the real problem would be human review of unsatisfactory or problematic responses, since those would probably include the relevant portion of browser history as well.

I get that but for most other people i.e. about 35-40% which is a lot it is still kinda useless and honestly I think majority people who use AI on a daily basis don't use chrome as their default browser.

And it's not just about the browser to enable this feature you have to turn on web and app activity which is much more intrusive than simple browser history.

I would be very surprised if this was the case - ChatGPT's usage amongst the general population (especially students and white collar workers) is recently high, and Chrome is by far the most popular mainstream browser.

Add that to the fact that a lot of Gemini use will probably be from people on their phones, where Chrome is even more dominant, and I'd expect most regular people who use LLMs (and Gemini in particular) to be Chrome users.

If I'm not mistaken, this is the permission that allows Google to actually use your browser history - they will ostensibly not use the history directly from your browser if you have this off (but will continue to do so through other means).

The reason I think that gemini is less common is mainly because Chatgpt came first and us much more common especially among students and the white collar workers you mentioned and they use it instead of gemini even though in my opinion gemini is better.

That is correct but what this setting also does is allow them to get data from other apps wherever google is integrated, maps, maybe your Spotify and google play and many others I think, so it is much worse than just history also when this setting is turned on it will not only collect the browser history and app activity of your device but from all other devices you are logged into and sync them.

Personalization sounds god gifted.
I want gemini to keep a track of all my secrets my emails, youtube search, Google search, what sites i visit.

Later gemini would suggest to select XYZ actress instead of ABC as per my YouTube and search history
