I presume you exported the contacts using 'People'. Copy the backed up contact file to your pc. Import those contacts in GMail. Create a new group if you want for the contacts or add them to the default group.

What happens if the update procedure gets interrupted due to a break in internet connectivity? Does the phone become unworkable? Can we just resume the update from where it stopped or do we have to go through the whole procedure again?
