for nvidia top end cards, there is this "vdpau" thing which is supposed to use less resources to render HD Videos.ie, the video players must be compiled with vdpau support..for eg: xine+vdpau,mplayer+vdpau etcetera... as regarding Ati, their proprietary driver(catalyst?) may be the option.
