first try to reset the cmos. it would not take more than a few minutes. and if you do decide to update the bios then do it through dos or if you have that Asus EZ-bios flashing thingy in ur bios options then use that. Refrain from flashing through windows. keep it the last option if required.

Most probably it is a power adaptor issue. try using a seperate power adapter cable directly from an unused psu molex for ur seagate hdd.Perhaps the 500GB hdd could be requiring more power for operation hence it would be better to feed it power from a different / independent cable...
