Problem in attaching a Secondary SATA H.D.D !

I am having a problem in installing a New SATA HDD (Seagate 500GB 7200.10) as a secondary sata drive in my system(Asus A8N-SLI Premium).

The problem is that when i add the New 500gigs HDD(in Sata Port2) along with my Current(recognised-System drive- Hitachi 250GB T7K Sata Hdd-in sata port1)), the New drive doesnot get recogniosed in the BIOS, & the system only recognises my Hitachi HDD & boots up from it!

But if i detach the Current System drive(Hitachi one), & only attach the New Seagate HDD(whether it is attached to Sata port1,Sata port2,Sata port3 or Sata port4),it immediately gets recognised in the BIOS!

The Crux of the Poblem here is hence, how can i get both my HDD(Hitachi & Seagate) recognised simulatneously in the BIOS & also appear in the Windows Explorer???

** P.S - I have also a third 250GB Hitachi t7k Sata2HDD,which was duly recognised & working properly(in sata port2), till it developed Bad Sectors & is currently in RMA!

* All Hdd (Seagate & Hitachi) r in Sata1 mode only!

My PSU is Powersafe(L&C) 500W, & am currently Not doing SLI mode too

& i use the following as a SATA power connector cable for powering both my HDD's!

Can any of the Experts Please HELP here ??? :help:

just clr the CMOs and the Problem will be resolved... same thing was happening with me when i bought my friends new HDD....

but after clearing CMOS it worked :D

try the method...

mostly it wil do the JOB

Now, the New drive is Getting recognised by the bios, but booting with the Dual HDD is talking a Hell lot of time (abt 10-12minutes) & morever, the New HDD is NOT being showed/recognised by the Windows Explorer!....Morever, the New HDD has also suddenly developed a tick-tick sound(while spinning @boot time & therafter) & is also running very Hot(at round 46-47 deg C @ ideal)!

I am really perplexed about all these!...Any Genuine Help here..Plz!!!

^Dude, chill. All the people here are trying to offer genuine help :)

Anyway, ticking sounds = bad news. You might have a bad HDD on your hands here. Do you have access to any other drives? If yes, try attaching them to the computer and booting up.

As for the drive not showing up in Explorer -> Start, Run, diskmgmt.msc, right click on the 465GB drive, make active, format. Should show up then.

arre bhai, why r u taking hard??? I know all help r genuine..whoever can help , only that i want some more feedbacks! :)

Also, Nowwhen i boot my system using both the Hitachi & Seagate Hdd's,the hdd SMART(during process) is showing imminent failure of the Seagate disk & asks for a immediate backup of data in the New drive(which whoever i have none),..& if therafter i continue(pressing F1), the system is NOT booting up properly to Windows(also there with a mild ticking sound intermittently) ...so the question of Explorer & disk management does NOT naturally comes up!

Anyway, i have used Acronis Disk Director for my previous Hitachi HDD without any problems!!!

Also, to tell, the SEAGATE hdd in question is China made with AAK firmware...Just my darnn Bad Luck!

I bought this said HDD last Friday ( 5-10-07), now in this circumstance, what would be my Best course of action 2 follow,...return the HDD to the Shop/dealer from where i purchased(ONLY if that's possible) or Go directly 2 the Seagate Service Centre in my city & go for RMA????

I am all, but completely confused here!!! Do continue HELP plz!

Went Primarily to the dealer who gave me this yucky Bad drive, but he did NOT give me a priority replacement of his own...he was too obstinate to budge...Worthlesss dealer fellow..totall sucker attitude...never ever going buy anything from that lowly fly-by-night shady dealer!

Now, whatever, just had to go to the service Centreof this yucky Seagate company & give it for replacement!...they told me a minimum 1 week wait...but i can feel it when i am getting a replacement...NO Time Soon!

Waiting Now for a LONG LONG Wait 2 get my 500 gigs back !!! :( :( :( All My Very BAD Luck!

One More thing, just look belowat the pic( sorry 2 Not mention it earlier)

The electrostatic pack in which the HDD(Seagate 500 gigs came) have a sticker, wherein the price of the drive is mentioned

Now the MRP of this(as in the sticker) is Rs. 5,000 per piece,Now I am More surprised than ever!:o :o :o

(Be Very sure, that this is the Pack which had the 500gb drive & i personally tore the White Warranty Label sticker on it)

Any idea Guys?

That sticker is really Weird. It doesn't even have the hdd model on it. No way the MRP of the 500gig will be Rs.5000/-

Where are u located btw, Accel is handling warranty Service of the seagate na, they usually take 3 or 4 days here in chennai, mite be similar in other cities too afaik.

Do check the serial number in the seagate website. Warranty Validation

If some regulars & experts r following my event Log above for problematic issue of my Seagate 500gb 7200.10(3.AAK) HDD & its RMA, i have a little update & want a sound & correct advice & directions from the experts as how to tackle this vexed issue & go about it!

As was told b4, I had a problem with my BRAND NEW Brought Seagate 500gb 7200.10(3.AAK) HDD Not getting detected at all (in BIOS & Windows), I had 2 give for RMA-Replacement unfortunately for the hDD(even without a single moment of any usage of it).

Though within the next 10 days, Seagate(Accel Frontline) gave me another 500gb 500gb 7200.10(3.AAK)HDD, but it was ONLY a Refurbished/Seagate "CERTIFIED" REPAIRED HDD.And As things happens usually with everything Repaired , this HDD also gave me the same Sort of Problems (Not getting detected, RUnning VERY very Hot as to even frying omlettes & constantly making ticking sound). Though it somehow once got detected & went to windows,i scanned the disk with Seagate "Sea Tools" & as I had assumed, it failed the Seatool Tests & that was End of it & again i was forced to do another RMA.

In between times, i called up Seagate Technical Support (Delhi) @18001801104 & briefed them about the continuous harassment i am genuinely facing about this dragging problem & i also emailed them@ “seagatecomplaints@igate.comâ€
detailing my Call Id(from ACCEL) & also detailing my Problem issue & points in therein.I demanded for a Fresh New 500gb 7200.11 Hdd or a Non 3AAK 7200.10 500gb HD to be provided. Though they did empathise with me & assured a Fresh replacement, but didNOT however commit for a 7200.11 Hdd or for that matter a Non 3AAK one.(for them 3AAK is the BEST Latest F/w Seagate provides for all Current 7200.10 disks & neither they do accept their ignorance)

Now Just yesterday, I did Receive a HDD from Seagate (ACCEL Frontline) as RMA replacement.Though this time, the buggers provided a different HDD - A Brand NEW Segate 750 gb 7200.10 Sata disk, but still it had that dangerous 3AAK label f/w on it & damm again a China make. Though i had my doubts, yet i accepted the HDD & took it for installation. &
OMG, OMG, OMG.....JUST AGAIN YET ANOTHER FAILED HDD from SEAGATE. This is just so Unbelievable, & i am at Total loss of Both Wits & Words, How come this BRAND New(apparently) Seagate HDD does again generates the Same set of repeat Problems, i am facing with all those earlier replaced Seagate disks??? (This disk also does NOT get detected in the BIOS, Running VERY very Hot as to even frying omlettes & constantly making loud ticking-screeching sound). Though it somehow once got detected & to windows,i OA made a SEATOOL TEST & as in all my correct previous assumptions about disk health, this time also this 750gb disk failed the Tests .The Whole situation is so Unreal now( All 3 Seagate 7200.10 Hdd failing within a span of 1 moth-October'07), that I am too taken back to make a correct situational estimate about the whole episode dragging me to my heights of frustration & anger. The plain Truth is that,I am at My limits of Patience.

HAving All my Work & Project suspended & qued in for the last 1 month, i am felling really bogged down & extremely frustrated, as to why ME & Only ME facing such a Weird Hdd Problem, when i want some BIG staorage space the MOST!!! So, is this Something going on which i am totally in dark ( a Whole Lot of defective Seagate HDD bneing imported & i am those of the unfortunate lots having one of'em) Or as If I am Really Doing Something WRONG/Ignorance in my Side?

Hence, now I want some Real genuine advices & Insights from those having faced such similar HDD Problems & having such harrowing experiences with Seagate( or any Other HDD brand for that matter) & also what action to follow Next???
My System config:
1) ASUS A8N SLI Premium mobo with Latest BIOS Revision 1303
2) 6800GS XXX GPU(Non SLI mode)
3) 1 GB(512 x 2) Twinmos RAM
4) 2(1+1) Hitachi T7k SATA2 250gb HDD
5) 1 Samsung S203B-DVD Writer + 1 Benq 1620 Pro DVD Writer
6) L&C (Powersafe) 500W PSU
7) Windows XP Pro & SP2, with all Latest Windows Updates.

** Multiple times checked all my SATA cables & SATA Power cables followed with changing to different SATA Ports(Port1,2,3,&4) for connecting the Seagate HDD,but all in vain { but surpringly my Hitachi Hdd's detects ,boots & works just perfect to any of the Sata Ports of the same mobo & that with the same cables & connections)

*** ESD damage probability was always taken care off,as i also do by holding the unpainted surfaces of the cabinet b4 installation & even working/installing the same, in bare foots(i follow this process by default for installing every other device 2 my system)

*** I had my HDD's checked in my Friends New PC & the problem got generated even there too,& this time (for the 750gb disk) i deliberately asked for a system integrator pal to try & install the HDD in my system, but he too unfortunately failed the Job!

ALL this happening & I have No clues about why is it all so & how to solve this Vexed situation ,once & for all time.So all Help r Most Welcome here!!! PLEASE PLEASE DO!

am speechless after reading this man. One suggestion from my side, once u RMA this 750gb, instead of trying it in ur system, try it in ur friend's . So that u can rule out that the problem lies in ur system. Just give it a try. Run all the test to make sure the hdd is working fine!

p.s you might also try the present 750gig in ur friend's system.

Somehow, I think it's power related. 3 failed HDDs in succession doesn't seem right. Do you have a 3.5 USB casing? You can try getting a cheap one for 300-400 and try accessing the HDD via USB. This will clearly show that the problem is not with the molex power splitter.(Have you tried another seperate power cable altogether for the new HDD?)

Don't think it's the PSU. HDD wattage is too low to cause any problems. Plus you mentioned that you tried the drive as a standalone.

You can wait for a some time and RMA this drive to get a better batch of Seagate HDDs. It's a possibility that the current batch was manhandled during shipping. In the meantime, if you're really desperate for space, get a WD 500GB HDD if you have cash to spare. Buy from a dealer who has a repair area so that you can verify that the HDD works at his place. Then bring it home.

I have to thank you for sharing your experience. I for one will not touch new Seagates with that firmware for some time until I hear user experiences to the contrary.

+1 for trying it at a friends place first. For all you kno its ur system which is screwin up HDDs :( perhaps a screwy PSU....

I feel the problem can possiblly be from using an Adapter for the power to the Seagate HDD. Try a power supply which has a built in SATA power connector and see if it works fine. I remember reading about this problem with Seagate HDDs a while back at the Storagereview forums.

If you are going to use this adapter it may help to NOT attach any other device to the Molex connecter on this power adapter.

EDIT: I dont know if this makes a difference to Seagate HDDs but a SATA connector on my Corsair power supply has 5 wires whilst your adapter has 4.

I am almost 100% sure it's a power supply issue, or a power connector issue. I think the connector is not making contact, but a bad supply can cause disks to fail pretty fast too - and I've experienced both failure modes.

5 versus 4 doesn't make too much of a difference. I have a 7200.11 500GB running off an adapter (which doesn't have the 3.3V connection, hence 4 wires) and it works just fine. I've not had a single problem with my Seagate (or my Hitachi, which also uses an adapter) 500GB drive, but I use decent supplies.

I've fried a 120Gb Maxtor with a bad supply before, and it was making clicking sounds before it bit the dust. Doesn't sound like a disk issue at all.

Eazy is right. Most probably it is a power adaptor issue. try using a seperate power adapter cable directly from an unused psu molex for ur seagate hdd.Perhaps the 500GB hdd could be requiring more power for operation hence it would be better to feed it power from a different / independent cable and not daisy chained as presently.

ps: eazy, the missing 5th wire in these adapters have 3.3V (orange) line, which is not possible from the standard psu molex. The Sata HDD's have onboard 5V to 3.3V convertors. first it detects whether there is a valid 3.3V supply, like from a standard sata power adapter directly from the psu (nearly all the "normal" current psu's have them). if it detects the 3.3V supply it uses that, otherwise it automatically converts the 5V (for e.g. from a psu molex adapter based cable) to 3.3V and uses that.

I fourth that- PSU. :(
What are the voltages reported by Everest??

Once while testing a psu for a friend on my rig, my 80GB primary hdd started giving those clicking sounds under load.
Doesn't happen with any of the PSU's i have- whether I use the native SATA power connector or the 4 pin molex- Thank You Hitachi. :P

The 6800GS XXX is pretty power hungry card and will require you to use the 2molex-pcie convertor that it comes along with.

If you are not making judicious use of the various molexes, you might end up overloading one line while the other lines are relatively lightly loaded.

When on a powersafe 450, i had to use that PCIe convertor and i made sure both the HDDs use molexes from different lines. :)
