From the symptoms described it *may* be a corrupted firmware problem and can be fixed. Was not sure about the HDD not being detected in BIOS. So I checked TE archives - I had the same problem over a year back and was not able to detect the HDD in BIOS...

I believe that in the case of 7200.11, in some cases the HDD is not detected in BIOS but the firmware can still be updated. There is also some DIY stuff on net about this. I suggest that you check the symptoms and the firmware version also as it only affects some firmware versions.

This is the 7200.11 series? Check if the HDD spins up. If so the HDD may not be dead but the firmware may be corrupted (known issue with the 7200.11 model) You may be able to update the firmware. If you are not in a hurry, you may be able to do it yourself. Seagate was also offering data...
