No one's fighting with you bro, its just that softwares do support muti-core procs. I don't know how far you are into your course but when you batch render in Maya, it even gives u the option to specify the no. of cores you wanna use. Check for yourself,

+1 Batch renders on my rig take up 100% proc power on all cores and an additional 150-400 MB Ram usage, depending on how heavy the scene file is (total ram usage at this point ~1.6 GB) and Composite renders on Fusion (32-bit version) consume 3.2 gb ram at abt 30-50% processing power. So if...

Batch renders suck up 100% processing power utilizing all available cores. So the more, the merrier :)
