Re: AMD Athlon II X4 640 vs AMD Phenome II X 955 BE
Im under the same dilemma and am tempted to try my luck with the Phenom II 555 Black edition at the same price of the Athlon II X4 and try to unlock the two extra cores. And in case you have not done research on the same, primeabgb has both of them for 4.5k and have a free shipping offer for another week. Seems to be the best online price.

Are you sure about this ? I see that the Athlon II has a TDP of 95w while the Phenom II has a TDP of 80w.
I think the TDP difference is due to difference in cores.
You’re true on that but the Intel H67 chipset I feel is crippled in its feature set, the Z68 chipset is a readdress in that direction to provide the best of both worlds and I think it is a better buy than either the H67 or the P67 at this point for the OP, but as usual the Intel pricing will be atrocious.
Re: AMD Athlon II X4 640 vs AMD Phenome II X 955 BE
Yeah if you want to over-clock get the Phenom II processor, if you don’t want to risk over-clock OR are scared of frying your PC get the Phenom IIx4 840 ~ 5200/- AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.20 GHz Review - Page 12/12 | techPowerUp completely worth it processor, one step-up over the Athlon IIx4 640.
For this price-range best motherboard would be the Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H ~ 4400/- GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3 - GA-880GM-UD2H (rev. 1.4), good feature set with trusty Gigabyte A.S.S., if the motherboard can’t support the extra TDP then risk is of damage to both the motherboard as well as the processor, due to excess strain on the electrical chain Chokes>Capacitors>MOSFETS and eventual burning of multiple PC components. What is the rest of your configuration and budget, for SMPS go for the Corsair CX 400 minimum ~ 2500/-.
Re: AMD Athlon II X4 640 vs AMD Phenome II X 955 BE
Thanks for the reply, i have already ordered the corsair HX650w PSU, so don’t think i need to worry about the power and wattage, since this is going be a single GPU system, i know the PSU is a huge overkill for this system, but i have other reasons for buying it which i don’t want to go into right now
Coming to Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H, if i am not wrong, isn’t the price 3900/- as quoted by someone i was looking for advice in the PC buying advice section
I am a bit concerned about overclocking it, with the phenom being a BE i know it’s going to be easy to overclock without all the hassles of FSB, but a lot depends on the motherboard as well, do u think the Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H would be able to bear it all, since i am not going for a water cooled system ATM, and it is going to be air cooled, but adequately air cooled since i am opting for a high end cabinet for this.
And lastly i do like the primeabgb deal with the free shipping, i think the price is very nice, does anyone have prior experience dealing with them, how is their service, i am just a bit apprehensive buying online, cos they certainly can dupe you bigtime if they want to. Any feedback would be highly appreciated
Also i am planning to buy it from wherever i get it the cheapest, i am even willing to go to Delhi to buy if I get good price there, i live in chandigarh, and LYNX people have ripped me off enough and i am tired of being ripped off like that, so this time i am determined to get the best prices, even if it takes endless labour on my part
Thanks !!!
Re: AMD Athlon II X4 640 vs AMD Phenome II X 955 BE
I know why you’re going for the Corsair HX 650W bruv, your secrets are safe with me .
I don’t know about the prices mentioned here on TE but I bought on yesterday at S.P. Road, Bangalore for a friend + Phenom IIx4 840 ~ 4400/- + 5200/- these were the damages respectively and this is what I’ve mentioned so that nobody flames me for ridiculously low pricing or similar.
Re: AMD Athlon II X4 640 vs AMD Phenome II X 955 BE
LOL Don’t let the cat out of the bag, don’t wanna start a fire again :ashamed:
Damn !!! you quoted me before i edited my post, hmmm primeagbg seems to be overpricing everything, the Gigabyte board is available for 3900 and they are quoting 4100 on their site, what if same is the case with Phenom, I will have to look deeper now:(
Damn people are so greedy nowadays, including me will have to search more for the best prices i guess.
Oops sorry i didn’t check before posting, I am sorry guys for getting all your hopes up.
That explains the 3900 price tag, that was for the Gigabyte GA-880GM-UD2H motherboard and not the Gigabyte GA-880GMA-UD2H motherboard , Hmmm… got to find something better since this doesn’t look is going to be available soon.
u r from chandigarh then make a round of sec 20-c computer market.u’ll find good deals there but u have to bargain.Availability of gigabyte boards is limited but u can find ASUS board easily.
man they rip you off more than Lynx does, Lynx only overquotes the price by 5%. but those bloody cheap people in sector 20 market overquote everything by 10%, so even if u do get 5% discount u still end up at a price which is equal to what u would get from Lynx w/o bargain but still 5% above what other people are getting in other parts of India.
LoL, this is the funny situation of our beloved India, no standards or business ethics at all, even if u get the product at the lowest price quoted on Tech enclave, there is still a 10 - 15% margin for the dealer at that price and on top of that they want the 5% more.
Bought the AMD Phenom II x2 555 BE, so i now need a mobo, to unlock this beasts full potential, want the most VFM option, i have also bought the NZXT phantom white cabinet so guys help with choosing the right mobo for unlocking the hell out of this proccy, i am looking at Biostar’s TA 890FXE and TA890GXE
GXE has a 4+ 1 power phase ( have read good things about it though ) , GXE lacks connectivity for the 6 fans of my cabby ( it only has 3 fan connection points), also revision 5.2 is the only one worth investing into (problem with bios not recognising USB keyboards with 5.0 and 5.1 revision boards), don’t know if i will be able to get it here in india
