I’ve been running coreelec/kodi on my ugoos am6b+ for about 8 months now. Over time, I’ve tweaked it here and there, tried different setups and figured out what works best for me. My current setup is:
True, Stremio is quick and simple to set up and for people who aren’t very tech savvy, it’s probably the best choice. Kodi, on the other hand, is highly customizable and great for local media as well. I don’t know a lot about Stremio, but I don’t think it supports dolby vision profile 7 or FEL.
Where did you pick the am6b+ from btw? How much did it cost?
I use an Apple TV 4K 3rd gen myself but I’m aware of the DV limitations. Still, operating on an “ignorance is bliss” basis and since I can’t really compare P7 vs no P7 (probably doable with webOS, maybe?). I do have a pending checklist item to try P8 conversion and see if I can spot anything.
Got it from ugoos.store, cost me 14k. it took 11 days to get here from China. So webos can do p7 now? Back then when i was using c3, I don’t think any dv profile worked in mkv container, so I had to change the container from mkv to mp4. That’s actually when I first found out about kodi, it could play dv even in mkv and would convert p7 to p8 on the fly. Personally, I think the main difference comes from the FEL layer more than from p7 vs p8 itself.
This sheet I found from some discussion says that much but IDK about FEL. It’s possible this is not a complete implementation either, else everyone would be raving about it.
Yeah, looks like it’s just conversion after all. I was just checking on the kodi webos forum and saw that people are using compatibility mode to convert p7 to p8.
Kodi is definitely more clunky to use on most streaming devices with low storage and RAM, not to say that the metadata integration makes it slower and things like fast playback are difficult to do for movie users.
Kodi is okay if you have a huge offline library and a hefty HTPC but probably isn’t a great streaming solution when using with Debrid services on everyday devices.
I started out with kodi because I was mainly playing stuff from my local hard drive, so stremio wasn’t really useful for me. Over time I’ve gotten comfortable with the whole kodi setup, and now it just feels like the best option
Yeah, if your hardware is good, kodi runs pretty smooth. Back when I used it on webos, it sometimes felt laggy if I had too much content loaded. By the way, does stremio play dolby vision profile 7?
Stremio just uses Exo Player and VLC for playback, neither of which supports Profile 7 inherently. However, Android as a whole has a problem with it from what I read last time. Sticking to a Linux distribution is best in this case.
main reason i use coreelec/kodi is because it supports every dolby vision profile. it gives me peace of mind that i’m getting the best possible quality.
