Buying DVD media

So I have been reading about how crappy Moser Baer is these days and stuff. Here are somethings I don’t understand:

  • How do you know that a DVD media is good or bad? Is it because the media doesn’t frequently burn without errors or is it because the data written onto it gets corrupted after sometime?

  • If it is the latter, how do you know that the media on a Taiyo Yuden will remain uncorrupted after say 50 years? I know the DVD manufacturers claim lots of things, but has someone actually have data go bad on a Moser Baer written 5 years ago?

  • I purchased Verbatim DVD -R and this is what DVD Identifier shows me: ```

I have some 100 GB of 'precious' data that I want to back up, so wanted to educate myself before burning all of it onto DVDs.

Thanks :)

read it, it may help you

Thanks, but I already know the difference between Brand vs. Media ID. My questions are slightly different.

Let me ask the question in a different way. A search for Moser Baer Pro and Verbatim on DVD Media, Blu-ray and HD DVD Disc Media list gives me results that say the media is good. So why are peeps here going gaga over media like Taiyo Yuden (which also, btw yields results that say ‘good’)?

^^ Simple exp. I have lost loads of data on MB pro and Sony discs. MB pro media actually melted (ie the substance inside turned completely transparent) And TY has not given me a single prob till date 20+ media burnt etc…

I will never buy MB pro no matter what the reviews would say from personal experience, TY is easily worth the extra cost IMO

The blue dye that you see in a MB disc will probably fade out in a couple of years time along with ur data :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: , I’ve seen that happening.

Moser is not all bad. They are average quality. But Verbatim and Taiyo are better. This is a result of user opinion in forums like cdfreaks, personal experiences and tests including specialized equipment. cdrlabs.com does quite a few of this.

I was never into scanning with nero cd/dvd speed, was happily using moser baer untill recently when a couple of them went bad after 3-6 months. Have started using Sony 16x DVD+R made in India which incidentally is made by Moser Baer India and show good scans and Taiyo Yuden. Hopefully these will last longer.

moser is bad, i lost my 20 gb data :frowning:

The best media readily available in India are as follows

Verbatim DVD+R MII
Verbatim DVD-R MII
Mitsubishi DVD-R MIT
TDK DVD-R MIT
Maxell DVD-R MIT (red colour box with golden coloured DVDs)

These cost Rs16 or so when bought in packs of 50. Stick to these brands and you should be fine.

Raghu.

I really want to buy this but bought too many yudens. Will get back on this.

Oops, please ignore above post, posted in wrong thread.

Verbatim is not widely available in India. Moser Baer and Sony are the most widespread and of the lot Sony DVD+R appear to be the best, got decent scans and are holding up unlike Mosers. Of course if you get lucky and find some Verbatim you should buy because they will definitely be better than the stuff locally available.

Thanks for your replies. I have purchased TYs and also quite happy with the Verbatims. TYs for ‘critical’ data, Verbatims for general stuff. Life is good.
