With Android becoming more and more close-knit OS - I would bet more on Linux than any other OS.
I strongly feel like the major problem with new os is they lack a play store, app store etc. If that can be cracked rest should be easy. Do you agree or do you think there are some other parts which are important?
I use fedora for productivity and serious tasks since I switched to cloud for most of the things and I wanted to install Pop OS but fedora is so comfy lol
i am temporarily going back to win10 now due for temporary purpose but yeah but will start with basics.
IDC about windows 11 ![]()
Few days ago I picked up my dad’s old Sony Vaio laptop from 2012. He got it fixed up with a new display and a ssd for boot drive last year so it is kitted well for some tinkering and poking around.
I set up ventory on a 64gb pendrive and loaded it up with some popular linux distros to try around and see how well this old i5-350m works against some newer laptops like my 2023 g14 zephrous 5900h(s?).
So far Solus Xfce and Fedora KDE Plasma have been my favorite to run. Aside from Creative cloud suite, which is something I need windows 11 for unfortunately. Linux based systems have been on my every other device aside from my work PC.
windows is annoying to me now ,cant stand the bugs it has
obligatory temple os
How is it different from mint or arch? I mean the comfy feel of it.
Fedora feels like improvised version imo - the workspace and icons and customizations strangely feels like mac os, though i won’t recommend this for new users , Pop OS is better than this since it comes with nvidia drivers, I have already used Ubuntu, Mint, Bodhi Os , Zorin OS and Fedora and only Fedora hits the sweet spot for me.. ( arch is too much for me..)
Strange, no one mentioned Zorin OS 18, Ubuntu, or Linux Mint.
All of these are exceptionally great alternatives to Windows OS users.
A while Back Gaurda Linux had suddenly became famous, but its popularity has waned.
Incidentally, Zorin OS creators confirmed over a 1 million downloads of its OS after October 2025 signalled end of Windows 10 support for general users.
Already downloaded ubuntu iso lets see, thought of starting with basics and then jump to whatever i want.
Need to find a pendrive now so that i dont disturb the windows boot drive.
Have 3 pendrives lol but all have some or other thing. Its time for a portable ssd purchase but the prices are not great
If you have enough ram & ssd space then you can also try in a VM.
Lol. Every year this discussion happens, been seeing this 3rd OS to fight Windows and Mac drama since 2000s. Still, Windows absolutely dominates gaming scene though steamdeck etc runs on Linux. Google tried ChromeOS and failed pretty bad. Go to any company where people work and all you see are Windows and Mac laptops.
My usage of Linux was very high when I was in college and in early stage of my career but the moment I got too busy, I switched to Win+Mac combo because they are still lot easy to setup maintain and use. Expensive, yes. Do they take less of my time, yes. Do they win, yes.
okay i will do that then.
Windows is going down, just because there is a history that doesnt mean its here to stay
Will linux change the scene, maybe not but definitely the big companies like steam can easily change the game.
Google has a lot of failed ventures so i am not saying it will kill windows but is it a new mac os where it can grab users ,probably yes
Yes, you are absolutely correct.
Windows dominates and Mac has dedicated followers.
However, Windows 10 ending official support, and Windows 11 not officially supporting MILLIONS of powerful and capable Computers, has given rise to a unique problem and opportunity for PC users.
Millions of Windows 10 loyalists are asking: Should I remain stuck with the Windows Ecosystem Or jump into the world of Linux?
For such people, Zorin, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and SEVERAL other Linux Distros are great alternatives to Windows. AND there’s a HUGE incentive in keeping slightly older but still very capable hardware alive and functioning well.
[Edit 1]
Corporates won’t shift to Linux. But what about Home and Small Office Users?
Most of the Work is now done online.
Mobile Apps are VERY Powerful and Capable.
Several Productivity platforms are in the Cloud, and easily accessible via ANY web browser.
Apart from a select few legacy Apps, Services, and Platforms, there’s NO NEED to stay loyal to Windows anymore.
This is the RIGHT time to set your older (No Windows 11 support) PC and install any user-friendly Linux Distro.
