Core i7 query

hi guys.. Me buying a new system - Budget is b/w 80k max w/o monitor
This is what i’ve decided..
GFX - HD4870 - 13k-17k
Cabby - CM690 - 4k
PSU - TX650/HX620 - 7.5k  <got it for 6k 3 months back :(>
Already have DVDRW,UPS,HDD’s..

Usage will be 3dstudio nd gaming :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
I’ll NOT do ne kind of upgrade for atleast the next 6-8 months except maybe addin a gfx card fr crossfire if i really really need one

Here are my ques

  1. My mobo of choice is Asus p6t delux. I will get a xonar to go along with it.. Is it better to jst get the rampage 2 extreme and leave out the sound card? How good is the supremeFX sound that comes with the rampage?
  2. Which RAM and where to get it? I prefer to buy from local dealers..
  3. Any other mobo’s that you might wanna suggest?
  4. Any other suggestions?

Thx in advance.. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

OT - Whats your usage??..

Jus a suggestion but you already got a performer rig imo…

i know.. That’s the one i have in my hostel..
This one’s for my dad.. He’s an architect who has a lot of rendering work to do to go along with his drawings.. For eg. he designs a multiplex and has to render it in 3d and show it to the client  And he does it for others too as a side job  Me noob in this work :ashamed: Trying to learn..
And ofcourse my bro will game on it  :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Well, if the primary usage of the system is for rendering, then i’d suggest going for the “Professional” GPUs. nVidia has the Quadro series, not sure about ATI.

The bad part: These are usually more expensive than normal gaming GPUs, and they suck at gaming (but excel at rendering)

IMO get Atleast 8GB RAM or 16GB RAM, QX 9770 or sm other gud Quad proccy along with a Radeon HD4850X2 (OR 4870X2) for the Rendering/Gaming PC for ur Dad/Bro.

Rendering need RAM, More = Better (Scales very well)

Rendering favours Multiple GPUs

supremeFX sound < Creative Audigy Value < Creative X-Fi < Asus XONAR DX < Asus XONAR D2X

Dont go for the i7

Are you alright? i7 will be much better option for Rendering work as it has shown it’s power in good Multi-Threaded apps (since the OP mentioned 3D studio).

IMO, P6T is better board with Xonar DX. Go for 6GB DDR3 kit, that should suffice as main usage of the system will pretty specific app oriented. Down the line as DDR3 prices crash you can add another 6GB kit as P6T has 6 slots of RAM, totaling out at 12GB.

Get 64bit OS though to get maximum out of your rig.

As for Graphic card, you can either go with Quadro (nV) or FireGL (ATi), or even normal gaming card will do good. By default the rendering is NOT DONE on graphic cards, there are special rendering plugins available for 3D Max which will let you use your graphic card for rendering. Pro GFX cards accelerates your 3D viewports allowing maximum realtime preview, thus reducing need to frequent rendering to test your scene. Pro cards are also more efficient in handleing complex scenes in viewports which normal gaming card might choke on. So carefully measure your need. Unless your result call for pro cards, no point spending on it as they cost significantly higher than gaming cards.

don’t u thik i7 is costly ?? if i were you i would have invested n graphic card and changed the processor later on after few months

  1. P6t delux is a decent board and getting a xonar would give u better sound at a better price range…

  2. Buy any cheap DDR3 ram but buy loads of it, since that will help in rendering.

  3. I guess the system wont be overclocked, so any stable board will do, as will the P6t you have chosen.

  4. For rendering purposes i7 is the way to go, as opposed to some ppl who would foolishly say dont go for i7. Also though the quadro line is better for rendering but they are far too costly. And a 4850x2 etc. would be able to hold its own for amateur etc. Ofcourse a completely professional architect who needs to render day in and day out should go for the quadro or firegl line IMO.

I wont suggest the i7 until its April-May. Q3 should expect revisions in the processor and the onslaught of cheaper P55-chipset motherboards. Not to mention cheaper and better DDR3 sticks. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

How does this sound:

Q9550 (or even the Q9650 once the price-drops’re reflected here)
Gigabyte P45 UD3P/X48-DQ6
4x2GB DDR2 Corsair XMS2 800/1066 MHz sticks
HD4870 1GB via KMD ~ Li’l less than 15k for the USD230 Sapphire.

U can either wait or get something like what I’ve suggested or go ahead with the i7. Take ur pick.

+1 :face_with_tongue:
10chars

Which 4850X2 is 230$? The cheapest is 300$..

^^^Atleast before refuting some1, couldnt you check a few US online store??? It certainly is selling for 230$ on Newegg with free shipping as well I guess.

1gb version is 240 $ , but 512mb buffer per card will be less for newer games .

thx for all the replies guys..

To ans some of the queries..

Dad changes system’s in his office once every two years or so.. i doubt he’ll go as far as to upgrade later this year.. Tht’s y i said core i7 cuz tht’s the platform tht’s gonna last.. and its faster in almost everything..

Core i7 stays.. no changes there..

  1. Asus p6t delux with xonar it is..

  2. Is the transcend RAM with delta ne gud? they gt it listed at 3200 fr 2gb on thier website.. seems a cheap enuf RAM.. could get 6 gb’s of that and change to more performing RAM when its affordable..

  3. He does do a lot of rendering work but i still don’t think its enuf to warrant a pro card.. Corei7 with an x2 or even a 4870 should be enuf imo..

  4. final rig :

Proc : Core i7 920 : 15500

mobo : Aus p6t delux : 21500

Sound : Asus xonar dx : 5500??

RAM : ?? : max 10k

Gfx : HD 4870/4850X2 : 17000

PSU : Tx650 : 7500

Cabby : CM690 : 4500

Total ~ 81500

Any changes??

EDIT : Dad has orig 64bit vista ultimate, 3dstudio, autocad and all already..

yea but alteast 4850X2 wayyyyyyyy better than a 4870 1GB when it comes to gaming @1920x1200 and 3D Rendering

EDIT: Yes** i7 is good if strictly no upgrade for 2 years** (Quad ws suggested if u cud upgrade after 8-9 months)

-But do go down on the RAM, Buy atleast 6GB today n 6GB later as also suggested by iGo

Are you talking about Pro Card?? Pro card or Gamer Card, it doesn’t make bit of difference in Rendering Speed… By default, most the of 3D apps will render using your CPU primarily. Unless you’re using 3rd party renderer which allows using GPU for rendering. Even then, Fastest clocked gamer card will render faster than pro card. What pro cards excel in, is actual 3D workspace and simulation apps. Depedning on your workload, they can dramatically reduce the need for frequent rendering.

@Rahulhbk : Make sure you check how well 4870X2 will play with 3Ds Max. I think, 3D max has some issues with crossfire drivers etc., but not sure.

im toking abt Sapphire ATi Radeon HD4850X2 1GB gamer card (recommending it becoz its now as cheap as 4870 1GB and performs MUCH BETTER)

if u are from bhopal then u can check out 4850x2 , i got one :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

i’m studyin in vellore.. so can get frm chennai and bhopal both.. I doubt i’ll get DDR3 at decent prices here though..
Doesn’t neone know which RAM delta has?? :frowning:
Another thing.. does sccf or TURE come Corei7 ready?? or do i have to purchase somethng seperately??
@robo - where u gt 4850x2 in bhopal?? :ashamed:
@iGo - couldn’t find nething much on tht.. Could u point me to a review or somethng which says crossfire has probs with 3ds?? Otherwise 4870 1gb it is
any other changes recommended?? Thx a lot for the inputs guys.. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

^^ the 4850x2 was from kayumdee
