Few Question regarding OC and new PC !

Hi

Since I have got a new PC. I have got some new questions.. Please help me figure out these

  1. I have 1’st install VGA driver i.e. ATI Catalyst 8.x , now it installed ATI CC with Avivo and all.. I recently downloaded the latest version 8.12 and tried to install. I have heard that we should remove older drivers before installing newer ones.. I did the same but the driver pack 8.12 removed everything and only installed driver no Catalyst Center and Overdrive or Avivo ? Why this happened ? How should I install correctly..

2 . When I boot my PC I notice the BIOS displaying RAM in ungaged mode ? and theres an option to make it in gaged mode ? Whats this ?

  1. I can OC my X3 to 2.53 ghz everything is normal .. But when I play games there are unstable frames.. I can even OC it to 2.6 but things get unstable.. So what should I do more while OC’in to maintain stability .. I only tweak FSB , I don’t know much about Vcore and other things.. ? Can I use my X3 @ 2.6 stable , or I had to opt for other better coolers out there ?

  2. I downloaded PCmark 05 and 3Dmark 05 demo version.. I ran the tests but it isn’t displaying marks ? I even updated my scores online but still no results . It just compare my modest rig with i7 ?

  3. How to moniter stability of system ? Any specif s/w ? I only have CPU/GPU -Z and Core Temps right now !

What are the other things I need to know about safe and better OC.. I can play well with BIOS but except FSB tweaking I don’t have much idea of OCing.. Though I have changed my ram timings from 6-6-6 to 5-5-5 .. Isn’t 5 cycle better for 800 DDR2 ?

Here is a SS of Cpu-Z and GPU - Z showing current status.. How much memory should I share with my IGP , current sharing is 512mb and my board has 128 mb dedicated for HD 3300 so it makes a total of 640Mb .. Should I reduce the amount or let it be like this ?

Also ATI Driver site didn’t display an option for ATIHD 3300 in any category, so from where am I suppose to d/l drivers for the same ? Should I download drivers of 3200 ?

Please do help me

Regards

  1. 8.12 should autodetect and install the entire package, try it again. It did it for both my 4870x2 and HD3200.

  2. Unganged is better for memory performance (2x64bit) as opposed to ganged (1x128bit). Both are dual-channel modes, but unganged seems to work better (IMO)

  3. You need to push the Vcore up a bit - even .1V should be enough to get you complete stability, but you will need an aftermarket cooler. I don;t if your case can take a CCF or TRUE, I use a Gemini II S which is a low-profile cooler and is sufficient to get my 9950BE to 3GHz completely stable and under 60 degrees.

  4. No idea

  5. Prime95 overnight is a pretty good stress test, even the AMD stress test works out the system sufficiently.

Most importantly, keep your voltages in check and temperatures as well, system needs to be at th balance of stability, speed and temperature. You should be able to get your memory to 4-4-4 without breaking a sweat, but you may need to push voltages near 1.9~2.0V.

I’m not aware of your BIOS, so maybe somebody will chip in and tell you which bits to fiddle with.

Thanks for answering  Can you please tell me more about Vcore settings, and from where to get drivers for HD3300 ? The ATI site didn’t list it !

Waiting for more enlightening inputs :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Strange - 8.12 clearly supports HD3300. It says so in the release notes, did you have difficulties installing it again?

Vcore is set from some menu in BIOS, you’ll have to wait for someone who has that particular board to tell you which. Most AMD 65nm CPUs operate at 1.3V default, and should be safe to 1.45 or so with good air cooling, on stock cooling shouldn’t take it above stock voltage.

  1. I downloaded PCmark 05 and 3Dmark 05 demo version.. I ran the tests but it isn’t displaying marks ? I even updated my scores online but still no results . It just compare my modest rig with i7 ? ----> It wont give you results, it will give you an option to submit results to the ORB where you can get the details. For the test to show the results immediately after finishing the tests, you need the Full Version.

-----> Dont go too high on vcore with air cooling.Keep a close watch on Temps too.Remember, your CPU has an IMC and it is sensitive to high vcores, atleast the earlier A64 were, not sure about Phenoms as i havent had the opportunity to use one. Memory clocking is pretty much easy on K8/K10. You should be easily able to crack 800 @ 4-4-4-12 @ 1.9V with any RAM. you will also get good bandwidth with tighter timings. Although i havent used the 790GX, my past experience tells me, dropping HTT Multiplier to 4X/3X helps in higher HTT scaling, at the same time i have heard that the newer ATI chipsets scale pretty well even with 5X multi.

Drivers - Vista 32Bit

Vista 64 Bit

Linux X86

Linux X86_64

Also try AMD Overdrive, heard it helps in overclocking especially if you have a AMD 7 series chipset.

Hope this helps.

Cheers !

drop the ram divider to 1:1 and up the cpu voltages a bit,a x3 should do 3Ghz with a SB750 mobo with some tweaking.

Overclocking is serious buisness mate. You could F**** your hardware pretty bad if u r not carefull. Before u oc just read this thread which i consider as the mother of all overclocking threads

follow guides mentioned in A64 overclocking sticky in OverColocking section get get basic idea abt how a64 ocing works..it will help u understand parameters n there inter-relations…

I used Sisoft Sandra and it showing HD 2XXX as graphics adapted under HD 3300 ?

How would you rate Sisoft Sandra Benchmarking ? Is it any good ?

Please suggest me some good CPU benchmarking utility

Also how can I update my BIOS without using inbuilt or WIndows utility ? From where I can check update availability for my BIOS ?

Regards

I did few test with my 5% OC system .. i.e. AMD X3 8550 @ 2.41 ghz, DD2 800 Ram @ 420Mhz 5-5-5-15 .. Used Sisoft Sandra Lite ed..

I don’t know how good this testing software is but Digit and other magz do encourage to use them. Ran nearly all the test and found that OC’ing X3 8650 by little I was able to outgun the X3 8750 and X4 9150 in nearly all the test ..

Great charts man, Your system looks tempting!!
How do u find your procy in comparison with E7300 as both are equaly priced??

Do some Super Pi 32M runs, good indication of CPU performance.

Jetway - Tech.On The Move - Download Address

Latest bios for your mobo, assuming you have the HA-07 and not the Ultra.

Instructions from Jetway site,

(1.) After you flash the BIOS, to load Optimized Defaults or clear CMOS is a MUST to ensure the system works properly.
(2.) BIOS Upgrade Step: Flash BIOS ⇒ Enter into BIOS ⇒ Load Optimized Defaults ⇒ Save and Exit
(3.) Please make sure that you are using the AWARD Flash Utility Ver. 8.83 before upgrading your BIOS.
(4.) Some motherboards incorporate SPI BIOS may cause the system crash by updating with the former version of AWARD Flash Utility!
(5.) when using AWDFLASH(we recommend version newer than V8.83)to renew the BIOS of this version"/cd/cp/ch/wb/qi"parameters are required.

(6.) Please let the folowing motherboard series use the updated tool Award Flash 8.27B.

Nice work there Dark Star!

at stock E7300 is better in multi-core efficiency and vastly better in latency and power management. Overclocked (my E7300 @ 3.6) scores over 20% in CPU arithmetic tests as compared to Tricore here. Cryptography is almost equally matched while in multi-media Tricore has advantage.

But the problem of AMD is that even with P35, E7300 scores better memory bandwidth than 790GX while running 800Mhz sticks (according to Sandra). But keep in mind that I am running my FSB at 400 (Quad pumped)

Dark Star’s Tricore is a nice CPU for its price and when applications utilize multi-cores, it will slap E7XXX series silly. Also Virtualization support is a big plus for Tricores as E7XXX lacks that.

For general computing and gaming, I think E7300 is quite good. Of course, E7XXX also OC like a rabbit in heat

PS: DS, don’t believe whatever SuperPi produces. It’s a toy and not a benchmark. And it always favour Intel big time.

^^yep PI test seems to favor Intell.. Well I OC my processor to 2.5 ghz and saw a significant increase in numbers.. Though OC done was only 9%
