Interesting - Although not just AI demands but also corporate greed, neglecting consumer focusing on servers/data centers. No wonder Consumers are getting RAMmed ;_;
I read this comment on Reddit that sums it up the series of fvck-you’s nicely
There’s always something hiding and waiting to fuck us:
2012: Floods in Thailand drove up HDD prices
2013: Fire at Hynix factory drove up RAM prices
2017-2021: Crypto boom exploded GPU prices
2017-Present: AI boom also increased demand for GPU’s, especially at the enthusiast/prosumer/workstation segments, and thus increased prices
2019-2021: Pandemic increased demand and thus prices for anything PC-related
2021: Ever Given blocked Suez Canal, though I forgot what was specifically affected… I may be misremembering the effect on the PC space
2025: AI data center boom now driving up NAND and DRAM prices
Companies are looking for any excuses to increase the prices of a depreciating asset like computer parts.
It’s reminiscent of the crypto mining era but possibly much longer and more profitable for companies. We are screwed.
It’s similar to how GPU prices have been.
Ram price have to rise just when i needed it smh…
My first taste of this was in 1999, 128MB of SDRAM ended up costing more than my processor.
That leads to today, where I’m an accidental ddr4 lakhpati:
yeah, this one I cannot forget. WD and Seagate 1 TB HDD were for around 3200 INR and suddenly doubled up the prices. We have seen it all, RAM prices > GPU prices > SMPS prices and now everything is going to be expensive.
Are you running a NASA Supercomputer?
The only thing crazier than 1TB RAM is actually using 56% of it.
An odd dilemma where two sticks (64gb) is not enough, three sticks (96gb) is just odd looking so you go with four sticks (128gb).
But hey, room to grow!
In actuality I downsized the workloads that this was originally designed for.
That would be so cool, I’d love to be part of SETI.
This started off as as a way to earn money by downloading those type of android apps in vm’s which then shifted to downvoting my enemies on reddit to now where I let other companies use my hardware to scrape the internet with their own software with a “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.
All traffic goes out through tor so that I’m protected from whatever these companies are doing.
Basically I give them ssh access to a console with internet.
People use it to buy shoes.
edit: the setup
The companies charge their customers $10 per gb and pay me $0.15 per gb, while I pay airtel $0.0015 per gb plus my electricity bill.
Likely those customers resell those shoes for $100 or more over msrp.
It’s a fascinating study in trickle-down economics where each layer has their own markup and liability/risk that they’re comfortable with.
And I think we can predict the upcoming F*cks as well..

Bought 2 for INR 3458 (INR 1729 ea) in Jan:
Now, the same stick for 5600 INR (single)

It’s Over folks.
This was the lowest I paid for branded 8gb sticks, and I remember thinking I was paying too much but decided that the aesthetics was worth it.
That was a year ago.
GPU prices are low and check these two news, its like the Crypto era is back where 1660S was selling for 60k.
So now RAM is going to be as expensive as Gold, soon!
RAM ETFs launching soon ![]()
I purchase Adata XPG D50 8GB x 2 in 2021 for 8260. Now it is going for 9950.
