Hitachi 320GB Doubts

Hi Guys

I am planning on getting a Hitachi 320GB Sata/Sata2 HDD.

But i have a few doubts.

1.> How is the replacement procedure if anything goes wrong with the HDD.

2.> Is the Sata 2 fully compatible with sata 1 port.
[As i donno if my casing supports sata 2 hdds]

3.> Whats the procedure to run sata 2 hdd on a sata 1 ports
Is there a jumper / flash required or some software / automatic.
The main reason i am thinking of getting a hitachi is
1.> Low Temps
2.> Less Noise
3.> Not so good reviews of Segate 7200.10
4.> Also many ppl on VRZ are saying Hitachi better than Segate

Transfer rate anything above 50MB/s is more than sufficient

If i have any doubts will ask later.

I have no idea about Hitachi but Seagate service is definately better atm

The T7K500 series is set to run at SATA2 speeds by default, however you can change it to SATA1 speeds if you want, currently I’ve it running as SATA2 but connected to SATA1 port without a prob, however some SATA controllers may have issues.

You can use the Hitachi Feature Tool to set is to SATA2 speeds

There is not much difference in temp between the T7K500 series and Seagate 7200.10, the earlier T7K250 ran much cooler.

Check out the link in the post by Eazy about running SATA2 on SATA1 controller http://www.techenclave.com/forums/which-sata-hdd-to-buy-83579-3.html#post524252

I am using Seagate 320GB 7200.10 series and getting a transfer speed of close to 65+ mbps. No problems for me till yet…

@Xfactor & evilution - Is ur Segate Singapore made or China made.

Howz the noise and the temps on the segate and how much did u buy it for.

Xfactor has given a good description. Maybe eazy(king of HDDs and cases) or funky should also comment. They have had a lot of experience with drives.

Btw…selfish motive here. Am also interested to know.

The Seagate is China made, had got it along with Zhops and Techhead … and so far no probs with any of them. I can’t hear the Seagate over my 7600gt’s fan noise, so it’s not an issue for me, though the Hitachi’s do seem to run a bit quiter, however the temps are similar for the hitachi’s and the seagate.

Got the Hitachi’s recently for 4650 from prime, that time the seagates were quoted at 5.1k odd, however looks like they are down to 4,760/- now.

Here’s the everest screenie with the temps

Here are the HD Tach scores on my Mobo

Got da rate of 4650/- for Seagate 320GB… BTW, was thinking of getting that OR getting 2160GB for [RAID0] OS, Games & TEMP Downloads. Any pointers??? I have 2250GB Hitachi as well as a 300GB 7200.9.. so data aint a problem :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Sorry Quad, needed some pointers myself wid HDDs.

i asked prime today…meenal said 4.8k for seagate 320gb… whereas no hitachi one was available…but said it will come for 200 less…

Is the Hitachi 7K500 Sata 2 320GB by default set to work for sata 2 ports.

As my foxconn mobo has only a sata 1 port so will it be recognized by the

software thats used to change to sata 1 or sata 2.

Also can someone gimme a link to that software for hitachi sata 2 to sata 1 conversion.

hoping its a bootable cd iso.

Yes it’s set to SATA2 by default but I had no problem installing it on the SATA1 ports of my Asrock mobo

From the link i had posted before …

as long as you havn’t got any of these controllers you should be safe i guess

Check my previous post for the link to the feature tool

Thanks a lot Appo.

It around 4800 for 8MB version and 5300 for 16MB version. The extra 500 bucks is not worth the performance though.

Hey eazy, where are the hitachi drives manufactured? Is there a PATA version available for these drive capacities? I’m planning to keep one 320gb drive in my PC and use one HDD externally to backup the internal HDD. I do not wish to spend a bomb on SATA casings(much rather spend on a PATA casing with firewire support.)
Would you say that the 320 gig T7K500(why is it 500?..should be 320 no?) would work comfortably in a USB casing?

@sydras: Looks as thought Hitachi is a Better Option for External Casing HDD… they Run cooler & less Noisy thats wat Eazy Told

T7K500, because the largest model is the 500GB drive in that range.
Most Hitachis are made in Thailand, IIRC.

Hitachi .. Single platter Max is 160 GB.

I checked out the noise samples at silentpcreview for the 7K500. Wasn’t impressed. The drive seemed kinda noisy. The WD5000KS seemed the most quiet. IMO, it’s better that the seagate barracuda that they use for reference.

Well i have the T7K500 320GB model, well its damn quite, and i can’t hear the noise at all. The Temp is 33c idle and 36 load

Can someone give me rough price estimate for 400 GB Seagate/Hitachi SATA 2 drive. Is it still extorbantly high? would possibly pickup a 320 GB in that case. Also how are the Western Digital Drives in terms of warrantry support and the prices?
