Jeff Bezos says owning powerful local PCs and servers “doesn’t make sense in the long run” and believes people will eventually rent computing power from the cloud, similar to how electricity is consumed today. He argued that users will “buy compute off the grid” instead of managing hardware themselves, especially as AI demand and the RAM shortage accelerate
No Thanks, i hope many are like me.
AWS is pretty expensive vs local machine. Maybe they will have cheaper versions for this kind of thing, but that will be enshittified once everyone is reasonably happy.
Remote desktop lag
Not being able to access machine if internet is down/bad
Data only in cloud
Gaming in cloud, nope for me.
Giving up control, no reason why they will not eventually add advertisements. So adverts from OS and from rented hardware.
For these people, ideal seems to be to have subscription and advertisement in everything.
I hope i am not in the minority. For people with occasional desktop use, this might be ok but then entry level desktops aren’t that expensive, atleast wasnt until these companies start messing everything up.
Yeah….no. Of course he will say that.
Brave it out for a few years, and things WILL normalize.
There is no Doomsday scenario here.
This period is prime pickings for companies and people like Bezoz to preach this stuff.
The assumption here is that enshittification is not the normal in the future.
Of course he wants you to rent compute from AWS. Dude needs to recoup all the alimony costs from earlier (and now there’s the new wife to pay the bills for too!)
Waiting for JIO to start the the " hire computing power"
Most users already rely on web-based apps, effectively “renting” it.
Yet they wont stop offering such shitty options awaiting a few bakras to fell for it..
With tons of restrictions on port nos and on the surfing side.
Uss mein bhi advertisement bhad dega( he will put advertisement in that too…)
They way he ruined that Amazon Prime video thing…I will not invest in anything Amazon in near future also.
Only shopping Rs 399 is fine. If they try to increase that too…then I will leave that too.
The more this Takla will try to squeeze out of me the more I will kick him out of my wallet.
( I am bald also btw so no disrespect meant to all taklas)
it makes total sense if you want to avoid censorship..or being tracked at least
Apart from the pricing, I suppose a primary reason why people tend to prefer local compute is that they don’t want a big corporation to have a look at their data.
Not only that…We are going too much in hands of few and they are taking us for a ride again and again.
Better not to encourage this even if initially I know they will make this offer totally worth it.
Until AI bubbles burst this will be a thing. Hopefully it bursts soon.
I’m all for it but totally not at the cost of diy personal computing…mate just capture 2000s 2010s personal computing zeitgeist why do these morons want to change something that’s not broken. The only language they’ll listen is through the law of land and I hope our SC and legislative actually deals with these non consumeristic trends that keep piling on.
He is right though (to an extent about the LLMs part).
How many of us own multi GPU and HEDT/server platforms for compute? Fairly few especially in India.
It’s offloading of some responsibility and uptime guarantee.
While data privacy is a concern, majority of cloud vendors have data access restrictions and regulations in place.
Also, capex vs opex.
