Will Microsoft become more open to open source with the departure of Bill Gates?
It’s a tough call. Observers from both the open and closed source worlds say the exit of Microsoft’s longtime leader won’t usher in a GPL era at the company but it will likely accelerate what is already a changing attitude in Redmond.
“We already see quite a different approach to dealing with OSS and OSS companies from Sam Ramji’s group [which is] doing a great job in establishing dialog,†said Rafael Laguna, CEO of Open-Xchange and a former marketing exec at SUSE Linux. “With Gates’ departure, the only mammoth remaining is Ballmer. With him away in a near future, Microsoft will definitely open up. They have to.â€
Gates’ exit will help acceptance of open source, another observer said.
“For much of Microsoft’s history, its primary strategic initiative has been Windows everywhere. Bill Gates was the primary architect of this and it has served the company well in reaching the $50 billion revenue mark. To get from $50 to $100 billion, however, they will clearly need to embrace the non-Windows world,†said Barry Crist, CEO, Likewise Software. “I suspect this will be easier for Microsoft to accomplish without Gates. We see substantive signs of this happening already.â€

"There is no doubt that Microsoft has no choice but to acknowledge that the closed development model for building software doesn’t work any more,†said Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation.
ooh, quick everyone better go open source cause Mr. Zemlin said so.
Pure bull!!
Web2.0 will be built on whatever servers can talk Web2.0.
I don’t really see things too differntly than with web1.0. You can run whatever app servers on any OS (if built to do so) and unless there is proprietary shit to deal with, expect a proper response regardless of the client you use.
So yeah, i expect more of the same, embrace & corrupt, regardless of who is or isn’t anymore running m$.
AFAIK web 2.0 isnt some app..
Its the normal thingie as your normal web. web 2.0 is all about social networking and social grouping technologies, use of AJAX, and some bling bling designed sites.

fewer bugs in the sense .. since its open source … making patches and updates would be easier.
EDIT:
There are better programmers around the world than microsoft can ever employ.

M$ does not need the best programmers with 90% maket share. They only need good architects which they have got in spades.
What they need are low cost armies which we help out with adequately.
Bill Gates or no Bill gates, microsoft may always start embracing open source if they see money in that too. Will they be genuinely interested in supporting open software and users? Only they can answer that.
Vista “taints” M$'s glory
bill departed da cozy chair… nt da world u c…his ideas will still have torch bearers if nt balmer some1 else in the pipeline…
