PC Specs: 9950x3D, AMP Extreme 5090, Asus 1000W PSU, 2 HDDs, 3 SSD, 64GB RAM.
I use this system for LLMs, and gaming.
I got this system 2 weeks ago, everything was working fine, games like HFW, HZD, Delta Force, FC6 etc were running smoothly without any crashes. I even fine tuned an LLM for an hour, no issues.
Yesterday the system crashed suddenly while playing AC Valhalla. I checked the windows logs, no warnings or errors. But the wire tripped, not for the whole apartment, just for the socket where the PC is connected.
It crashed again while playing FC5. Again, nothing in the logs.
Is my power supply enough? No overclocking, everything at stock.
Could this be due to voltage fluctuation? I never saw any indiactors, but could it be possible? I live in Bangalore if that matters.
Also, i have a 4080 super attached in the second PCIE Slot, but it has it’s own power supply.
Voltage fluctuations are almost non existent in urban area nowadays, in addition to psu having protection against the same.
Most probably your extension board might not be rated to power you are using through it. Get atleast 16A rated board since you might be using more than 1000W through it.
Or the extension board might be old and tripped due to continuous use.
Better get a extension board made from your local electric shop. Let them use Anchor other high end switches. Tell him it’s for high power requirements, so he will use higher guage power cable like those which come attached to cloth iron.
You can customise it as per your needs. The quality of extension board from Amazon may be hit or miss.
Regarding the current requirements 10A will be sufficient since you won’t be going above 2000W.
Invest in a smart switch if you want to keep track of your power consumption.
Personally speaking, if I were to spend that kind of dough on a rig like yours, I wouldn’t trust to plug it into a Portronics board. Do you also not have a UPS btw?
Check the health of your wall socket 3 pin plug. Is that a multi-board with multiple switches and 3 pin or just a dedicated board for your pc?
I have exp. where the internal wire burnt yet the connection was as is resulting in occasional power-fluctuations and sparks.
Move/test your rig in another room on different sockets.
With 1k watt psu you maybe getting close to its limit with those hardware if it’s not atx 3.1 psu.. just a wild guess..
Also get a good quality extension board which can handle above 1200watts with proper earthing to the main wall socket.. some PSU are very picky about it, sometimes my silverstone da850 didnt even start when no earthing available and had to capacitor discharge by turning off wall socket and holding pc power button for a minute..
The problem seems to have solved itself. I don’t know what the issue was but the system doesn’t shut down anymore.
@14sandy yeah that’s a good suggestion. Btw if I were to invest in a smart board that can track power consumption, which one shall I go for? Any off the shelf products available in the market?
@runofthemillgeek yeah that’s a good idea. No I don’t have a ups. I thought of getting one but I just save my work (model checkpoints) just in case the power goes off and resume from there.
Apparently this problem is common with 9950x3d users. A lot of people are having this problem, as can be seen here, here, here and here.
What i tried:
memtest (1 pass) for 45 min, 6000mhz. No erros
Furmark for gpu, 30 min at full load, no erros
OCCT CPU stability: 15 min full load, no erros
But apparently the system crashes while playing games. No issues with LLMs.
I should also mention that the red CPU light on the motherboard is on (out of the 4 lights, for CPU, RAM display etc) and the ARGB lights on my AIO cooler fans and case fans do not light up anymore.
