Used RAM prices

what if comp decides to give CREDIT NOTE ?

Same. I paid my luck forward to @ibose for 2x32GB SODIMMs

Guess the buyer is screwed then ?

wait for the effect to hit mobile phone manufacturers who need ram chips

Absolutely that’s how economy works. People complain about the sellers creating new listing cuz they can’t get the deal they want is a bit sad. The only exception and moral point would be seller backing off after finalizing a deal just to be a c**t…rest should be fair game.

There is no such thing as good or fair price.

DDR4 has been announced EOL but production hasn’t stopped altogether and given the demand it will continue through 2026, DDR4 nodes are no longer a rocket science and Chinese manufacturers will soon flood the market with DDR4 rams

Current situation

  1. Only Samsung and Micron have officially sent notices, and the production hasn’t stopped altogether
  2. SK Hynix will continue the production till Q2 2026 and if Samsung/Micron are dumb enough to let SK Hynix get the entire Pie so be it. But chances are it’s not going to happen.
  3. Chinese Manufacturers already have good understanding of tech and will soon flood the market with DDR4 rams.

Chips that get rejected by major manufacturers get dumped in Chinese market and these come back in retail market from Tier C or D ram makers.

This happens when the big companies are manufacturing them. There will be no rejects when there is no production. Chinese Manufacturers do make RAMs in-house too and good quality too. This issue is only relevant when the RAMs are still being made.

Ram chips are manufactured by hynix micron and samsung. Top quality chips goes to corsair g
Skill etc. Lower quality goes to cheaper ram makers.
Lowest quality goes to unknown brand makers.

Top tip for someone looking to buy new ddr4: I have 50+ sticks of ddr4, it makes no difference if it’s corsair or evm — they’re both indistinguishable in day to day workloads.

If I was younger, I’d be selling my branded ddr4 and buying unbranded ddr4 and getting a new phone or ebike with the difference.

If I was way younger, I’d be dumping everything and switching to server memory (rdimms) and invest in solar with the difference.

It was the exact same with DDR3. Absolutely no difference between real HyperX and fake HyperX. Same benchmark scores, same bandwidth, same uptime reliability.

Memory is just not crucial enough (ha) to have a noticeable impact on speed/responsivenees and it is mature enough to have the same reliability across the board.

Ok let me explain. Once a RAM node is being actively manufactured,.. yes they are binned and sold to different markets per quality. During the lifetime of the node, the mediocre ones (lower clocks, high temps etc) are sold in various markets and are prices accordingly.

Now post EOL. There are no rams being manufactured..none at all. However, there are other chip makers that now have the capability to make DDR4-DDR3… and they do. I am talking about these products. DDR4 is not new enough for these manufacturers to be a challenge, and they make good quality RAMs.

You think hynix, samsung and micron are manufacturing DDR3 still in use in multiple sectors?? nope all chinese and some basement Taiwanese manufacturers.

absolutely. When the RAM node is new enough yes the big boys do make good ones but after 4-5 years it doesn’t make much of deference for consumer rams.

and it’s a travesty that ECC is not a standard in consumer segment even in 2025.

I got screwed over with the credit note. Fuck Teamgroup RMA and PrimeABGB as well for not consulting me about getting a credit note.

I sent mine in RMA and PrimeABGB calls me and says that the company has provided a credit note of 5900. I bought the kit for 6800 I think?

I was planning to resell them for a profit, I was gonna sell them for less than new since they were RMA units and not the crazy prices. But God damn they ghosted me during Diwali and didn’t provide me an option to reject the RMA. Even computech has left me hanging for 3 months now with the RMA, I called them a few days ago and they’re gonna provide a similar kit as a replacement.

So……..those lifetime warranty rams don’t feel like lifetime anymore. This has to be a sick joke but we all already knew this would happen. I want to blame everything to the AI data centers and AI tech bros.

Yeah that’s what I was trying to tell them, that the RAM is supposed to have lifetime warranty, but apparently, “no stock”.

Wait why ram production has been stopped? now that the demand is at peak, manufacturers seems to be sleeping.

RAM production wasn’t stopped; 2022-2024 manufacturers had a lot of inventory, so they stopped/slowed down production and wanted to phase out DDR4 for good. Now with datacenters hoarding RAM the spot price has shot up and given that most of their capacity will go to fulfil future DC needs it will further affect the RAM prices. Now three things will happen

  1. DDR5 RAM prices will come down a bit but thats about it. It’s gonna stay high for forseable future :frowning:
  2. They might decide to phase out DDR4 completely or not either way Chinese manufacturers will pick up the demand. So the situation should improve.
  3. When AI has burned through all the investor money, the market will be filled with RAMs selling for pennies.

So as always, take a chair, a beer and enjoy the show

I won’t reply further on this thread around the meta of this topic but the whole point of my and alap4m’s response was centered around Tech Enclave’s spirit as an inclusive community and not just a marketplace. We made a call to action for buyers to wait while suggesting other everyday users to consider a broader perspective if they want to list their RAMs (excluding resellers).

A buyer negotiating seller’s price doesn’t ring the same level of predatory to me than jacking up (even upto2x) the price of something USED based on artificial/temporary scarcity. Subtly enough, low-ballers are always called out in listing descriptions so I think predatory pricing should be called out as well, that’s fair game.

Rest what you said is spot on.

My comment wasn’t addressed to anyone in particular but just a personal observation. I do think scalping by actively buying up GPUs or consoles etc and thus denying actual buyers a chance to buy them is - bad, predatory, harmful etc. But this ain’t the same. You bought something to use for yourself, not with the intention to deny others a chance to buy, then you should be able to sell it at a fair market price, sell low when there is low demand, and sell high when there is high demand.

A community like this is built around the idea of sharing knowledge, not goods. We make friends here and if a friend asks and you have a surplus of something, most people here wouldn’t even charge them, I believe. Depends on your friendship, of course. But that doesn’t entitle people to buy or claim something from others who don’t want to sell or share that thing below their marked price. Sorry to say but that sounds like entitlement under the garb of community spirit or whatever. An exchange should be fair to and agreeable by both parties.

It is totally up to individuals to ignore or avoid such sellers, and I think that’s what should drive prices down if all can agree on that (i.e. demand should drop when facing low supply).

Seems many new members are missing below:

“You bought something to use for yourself, not with the intention to deny others a chance to buy, then you should be able to sell it at a fair market price, sell low when there is low demand, and sell high when there is high demand.”

This has become another avenue to hunt for deals. It was supposed to be sharing used items for better use.

I remember I bought new gskill 16gb ram 2x8 for 16k in 2018 may. The ram prices were a lot higher then I don’t remember why but now it’s the same.
