Russian studio behind Optimus OLED keyboard unveils name, photos of much delayed keyboard

The Art.Lebedev Studio, the company responsible for the vaporous Optimus keyboard, unveiled press shots of the Optimus Maximus, the newly re-named $1,490 keyboard featuring OLED keys.

The Maximus will have 114 keys, some of them featuring 32x32 pixel full-color OLED displays that are replaceable and customizable by users. Production of the keyboards began on February 7, 2007, the company announced.

The company is not showing the keyboard during CeBIT in Germany, even though it appeared that a working unit would be presented during the event. Furthermore, the release date of the pricey keyboard will be pushed back until this December.

DailyTech - Optimus Maximus Keyboard Pictures Unveiled

Guess they had an overdose of watching transformers when they named this :p Or maybe gladiator. They should have named it Maximus Decimus Meridius - Commander of all keyboards, loyal to the true standard, QWERTY. Victim of marketing hype, back from the dead, and it will have its revenge!

Roll up, roll up for the $1,500 keyboard 1:08PM, Wednesday 16th May 2007
It's not often a new keyboard attracts widespread attention - then again, it's not often a new keyboard costs $1,500.

However, the Russian company behind the much-hyped and long-awaited Optimus Maximus keyboard is about to start taking pre-orders from computer owners with more money than sense.

The Art Lebeved keyboard justifies its extravagant price tag by placing a small OLPC display behind each of the 113 keys. Specially programmed software will be able to change the picture on each of the 48 x 48 pixel displays - allowing games to display customised shortcut layouts, for example.

The first batch of 200 keyboards will start to ship at the end of November, but wealthy typists who are keen to get their hands on the device can place pre-orders from May 20.

PC Pro's review of the three-key version of the keyboard earlier this year (see issue 148, p93) concluded that: 'At £115, it isn't cheap, but is still a diversion for the user who has everything.' We'll let you know as soon as we have review samples of its bigger brother.

So who here wants to get one? I for sure do!

hah  $1500 keyboard

i luv the design though wish it were available for 1k INR :(

1K INR for a 1500$ Kbd is a huge bargain which will never happen.

I feel its a waste to invest so much in just a keyboard.

haha.

However, if OLEDs ever take off, this stuff will be el cheapo. So wait 3 years and this will cost no more than the regular keyboard....

(OK, so maybe it'll cost a little more)
