Mac OS 1 USB port not working in my 7 months old MacBook Pro...

I have only 2 USB ports and 1 does not work now. Very frustrating. If I insert a pen drive, hdd or anything USB it says the device malfunctioned. However inserting the same in the other port works. I tried reinstalled OS X Lion - doesn't help. Recently I installed Win 7 home basic using bootcamp assistant. and here also it does not work.

I am a bit hesitant to give it to the service centre guys. It is my laptop :(

Also how do I protect my data from those guys who do not sound very professional anyway.?

I wish I can look about it myself. Any suggestions where to start?
 
You could try encrypting the HDD. But if your MBP is the one with the SSD, why not just back it up? and delete from the MBP?
