Usually what happens is that when you remove the cable from the HDD, boot device priority changes in BIOS. Check if it's set to the HDD where your OS is installed.

As for WD failures, i recently bought WD Caviar Blue 500GB which developed bad sectors after 2 weeks. Really shakes your confidence on WD since it was the first time i bought a WD after going only for Seagates, which have proven quite reliable.

When i feel that something is wrong with my pc, i usually check event viewer. If there are bad blocks it will show which HDD has it. After that i scan with HD Tune to confirm it.

Yeah I do that way. Is there anything better apart from the normal scan in HD Tune?

How do you go about checking bad sectors on your drive sawmill? :)

Btw ran an HD Tune quick scan today afternoon with all my drives and all iz well. :P

HD Tune didn't show bad sectors with quick scan on my HDD, only normal scan detected the bad sectors.
 
yup sometimes it is good to run normal test time to time...specially if/when your system is showing unusual response.

a long lag while browsing HDD..usually ending with a click may ring some bells...that is when you buy a spare HDD and spare yourself by backing up all the data :P
 
OMG does that mean there is no way to recover your data from these HDDs?

I have a less than a year old WD Black 1TB and it stopped working after a few months. I thought its my motherboard which is acting up strange but now I am worried that maybe my HDD has gone?
I also have one more 500GB Seagate HDD which had a universal fault in it (.11 model or something). I need to get it replaced as well. I hope that also did not die.

I haven't tried these HDDs for a few months now because I first need to get my motherboard checked and power supply replaced with a bigger one. I hope everything is fine.

PS: How much would it usually cost to get a 1tb HDD recovered from Nehru Place? I have some very important data and family photos of overseas holidays all in it :O
 
I believe the element of luck (or badluck) is also involved in this. Sometimes theres just no reason for the failure of HDD..

HDD's might be the slowest part of your computer, but they are also by far the biggest feat in sheer engineering prowess.
A read/write head upon a platter spinning at 7200RPM 24x7 with 1/9th's of a hair's width worth of space between them is just tempting fate. And yet we get away with it...
 
I used Recover.My.Files.Professional and recovered each and everything in my 320gb hdd when it changed into raw.
 
2 bad sectors shouldn't be a problem as of now. A full format should mark those sectors as unusable and prevent data from being written there. Trying to find out why those sectors went bad is troublesome. Weak power supply, improper shutdowns, faulty cables or just a weak drive?

If it's under warranty, I'd recommend trying to contact the manufacturer and find if it's possible for a RMA. If it's not, do back up your files regularly (I'd recommend that even if the drive is healthy). Bad sectors coming up might be indications of a dying drive but then it might run for years. Just check regularly. If more sectors come up bad, it's dying (how did I figure that out :P).

If your reallocated sector count is at 36 or lower (For Seagate) then you are in a data loss situation.. keep an eye on this value regularly... All modern HDD's have some sectors reserved, when there are some bad sectors the data is moved to these reserved sectors & bad sectors are marked..
 
Scary stuff, me think ill buy another Free agent/My Book instead of the current internal HDD's .

Do you guys think the current external ones are having lesser issues?
 
Dude thats complete bollocks, its been 2 months and im still waiting d replacement of my 1tb my book edition. They keep saying not in stock. and since im from mumbai and wd is in delhi, i cant do shit.. Dont even get started on their royal treatment.. They are nothing but a bunch of liars. I still havent got my hdd.. ill probably post their mails and proof abt how they lie to customers.
I had to write to WD usa to get things moving. Now suddenly im getting mails daily from wd india giving me assurances again...

although..none of the seagates ever failed on me untill this ST3500320AS..but still my preference of hdds have changed from seagate to WD now solely because of how WD treats customers royally and how seagate treats customers like sh!t.

as for even brand new HDDs showing up bad sectors... that would either be a case of improper quality testing or improper handling during transit.

This is even more risky
HDD can fail as well as the USB interface (which is more prone to failures)
Data cant be recovered unless you break open the casing, which inturn will void warranty

I would suggest an internal HDD with external casing

Doesn't look that good I guess?

I have more HDDs (full of important content, and I don't mean warez :S). These are not running right now as I guess my PSU is at it's limit. I have another PC which uses some of these HDDs but that's not running these days either.

1x 80GB + 2x 250GB + 1x 320GB + 1x 500GB + 1x 1TB
Only the 1TB and 160GB ones are WD. Rest are all Seagates.

My primary PC configuration:
MSI Platinum Combo, Intel Q6600 Core 2 Quad, 2GB DDR2 RAM (soon going to upgrade), MSI 7600 GTX OC, Some 600W PSU (soon upgrade), 2x BenQ 2420s, CM Stacker 830 :ohyeah:

Somehow I am never able to find enough time or money for my dear hardware. I went to Thailand earlier this month and saw all kinds of stuff there but couldn't find the time to buy any upgrades. Only bought a Dell 1564 Laptop.

I'm planning to spend around Rs. 20k on my PC to bring it up to date and to upgrade/service my HDDs so they all come back to shape.
Any advise for me?

received a new 1.5TB HDD today from WD as the RMA drive..

It took WD around 10 calender days to have it replaced...Good service IMO
