10 reasons why I'll be passing on the iPad

C'mon guys, give it a break will ya?

This device isn't meant for techno geeks.. It's meant for folks who aren't exactly computer lovers but aren't too comfortable using them...

For what it's worth, I'm certainly picking one for my Papa who is actually scared of using his windows lappy and switches it on only when he is left with no choice (e.g when the neighborhood uncle pesters him to check his son's exam results online)

Not a bad device for non tech oriented people looking for nothing but web browser device with a superb touchscreen and a media player.
For ppl like us its no use so i'm sure there are many "it sucks" threads on almost every forum backed by apple fanboys.

I won't ever purchase it for myself, but will certainly grab it for my mum.
not that i hate it,but it could have been a lot better for me if it were a laptop replacement-ran osx.

Since the day it was launched I had one and only one reason I wanted iPad for... and here it is : Comic Books Will Look Incredible on the iPad - Panelfly ipad app - Gizmodo

Ever tried reading comic on your iPhone... or any touchscreen phone... it's just not the same as reading on your desktop or actual book. This thing has size and interface that makes reading books (Comic books in my case) a breeze.

The second most reason would be Photos... I can show off my photos way better on this thing instead of relatively small screen of iPhone, or to lug around my laptop.

I agree that it sucks there is no USB or card reader, so I can dump my photos directly on this.

I'm pretty fine with touch typing so no keyboard isn't deal breaker for me at all.

I'm sure that multi-tasking WILL come sooner or later. Current iPhone/iPad hardware is capable unlike first generation iPhone, it's just the software that is lacking support.

Just remembered the argument I had with another friends... apparently he found the big bezel around the screen to be stupid. I found that also to be one of the general notion against the appearance of iPad. Well for those who think the large bezel is stupid, it's not. It's there because when you hold tablet your thumb and in some situations your fingers will be occupying significant area off screen edges. The bezel is there as buffer area for your holding without having to adjust your holding habits just so you don't hinder the screen area with your fingers. I find it a good thinking on product design part.

All in all, this may not be best computer alternative for carrying around... but then again, I'm not looking for one and given it's current battery life it makes much more attractive buy at it's current price point. Even if I'm not dumping all my hi-res photos on it, 16 GB is more than enough for me.... and if Indian prices are too high compared to US prices, I'll pick it up from US. But I'll be buying one (make that two for my significant other) for sure. haters may hate. :P

These people are the reason companies have to upgrade their products for better. If everyone was OK with what Apple (or any other company) made, the iPhone still would not have seen basic things like copy paste.

You can thank haters (as you call them) for this :).

Whats the point of getting the iPad for browsing when it does not even load the flash content. Half the sites would be crippled.

Well the Apple honcho did say, that it would support HTML 5.0 or something. Till then, we can make do with black holes, when we surf. How nice. Its like buying a car without a rear view mirror. Perfect. Way to go Apple. You know when I decided I would never use an Apple product. The first time I had to use iTUNES (for my MotoRazor V3). What a dung piece of software that was. Then I tried my hand on the iPOD and groaned. No Apple for me. Ever.

@tarey_g: Nope... hater is the person who is otherwise known as anti-fanboy. Nothing any company does to improve it's product changes their mindset and they do not contribute anything positive whatsoever to improvement.

Critics I can deal with when the criticism is rational. I don't like few things about iPad and I'm vocal about it. But for the reasons I find the point in the devices existence, I'll buy it.

@LN:... I develop Flash websites/Applications for living and I have to disagree with Adobe here... Jobs is right, Flash on Mac, in single word, SUCKS!

In my daily work I have to test flash interfaces I developed on various systems & platforms. I can tell you, despite being the most widely used browser plugin... flash player is the best example of lazy development practices and stupidest bugs where one can least expect.

In couple of our experimental flash interfaces, I would hit lag even on my Quaddy running at 3GHz with 4GB ram running in full screen. Don't ask how the same thing ran on my C2D macbook, crash and burn are two things that come my mind. Imagine Flash having jolly threesome with your devices CPU and battery.

Although I work extensively on Flash, I've been advising my clients to steer away from flash unless the requirement is specific or possible only in flash. Also, since past year I've noticed a trend with my US client where they explicitly request alternate content development for non-flash devices/browsers where flash has been used in website. Just recently we did two websites, where client wanted Flash video player/Quicktime video player/iPhone video support, depending on visitor's environment.

And for that matter LN, if flash was so much of saviour of web, people wouldn't have used Flashblock. :P

I would like Flash on my iPhone, but it not being there hasn't crippled my surfing experience on iPhone except for few websites where people don't follow simple accessibility practices. I would like Adobe fix their junk first then I'll be happy having flash on my iPhone or laptop.

In related news, Firefox RC3 was released for the maemo platform:

We’ve decided to disable plugin (not to be confused with add-ons, which are supported) support for this release. The Adobe Flash plugin used on many sites degraded the performance of the browser to the point where it didn’t meet our standards.

Ah, dear old flash...

Something as stupid as farmville makes my C2D lappies (both Windows and Mac) hit 50-70% CPU utilization...

People losing interest in iPad

Hype backfires
All the effort that the alliance between Apple and the US press to peddle the iPad appears to have backfired.

For months the Apple stoked US press has been telling the world that Steve Jobs would change the world with his giant iPod touch. Initially there were indications that it might have worked, but now punters are starting to lose interest. It appears that most have worked out that the gadget is pointless, expensive and means nothing to them.

The survey was conducted by electronics shopping site Retrevo. It says that two weeks after the product's unveiling more than twice as many respondents said they were uninterested after the iPad. Retrevo did similar surveys to gauge interest in Apple's new portable touchscreen device both before it was announced and after.

Before Jobs' Mob's Nuremberg Rally announcing the iPad 26 percent of those surveyed said they knew about the device but weren't interested. After the announcement, that number jumped to 52 percent. Three percent said they would buy an iPad without knowing anything about it. That number went up to nine percent. Another 21 percent of those surveyed said they were still interested but wanted to know more about it. Only 18 percent steadfastly claimed to still know nothing about that iPad and not care one way or the other.

Most punters have realised that they don't need an iPad. Almost half of respondents said before the announcement that they didn't need one, and 61 percent said after the announcement that it was unneeded. More than 59 per cent said it was not worth the extra $130 upgrade to 3G data. Just 12 percent said yes. The rest were still undecided.

With seven weeks yet before the WiFi-only version goes on sale, and another month to wait before the 3G models roll out it is starting to look like interest is sinking. It would be jolly nice if for once consumers realised that Jobs mob is peddling a bit of overpriced tat which is useless to God and man.
