Camera 1000D versus the 500D

I am looking to get my first D-SLR this September. (Yay!) My budget is ~35k.

The two canons that fit within my budget are the 1000D and the 500D, and I am stuck between them.

From what I could gather from stating at spec sheets the real world pros for the 500D are:
* Better low noise performance: A plus for me because I like taking pictures at night
* Video: always nice to have
* Faster continuous shooting.

And the plusses for the 1000d are:
* 10k cheaper, thus enabling me to get a cooler lens right off the bat
* Cheaper, and yet has all the feature I would typically need.
* Cheaper, you get the drift... :D

I do have some experience with film SLRs so beginner friendliness is not a factor for me. I am not willing to look at the Nikon D3000 or the just announced D3100, because they *do not bracket*.

So folks, your opinion: 1000D+goodies or just the 500D.

PS: I am going to get the fifty prime either-way.

Have you considered the 450D? If you can find it, it wouldn't be much more expensive than the 1000D but much better feature wise. That should still leave you with money to spend on lens and goodies.

Canon's website lists the 450D kit to be at the same price as the 500D kit, so I was not considering it.

The reason I was interested in the 450D over the 1000D was the fact that it has the IR remote option.

What's its street price? And how much does a decent remote/intervalometer cost?

EDIT: Another important question. To Gray or not to Gray?

Why not recently released Sony SLTs? I miself was a big fan of Canon 550D, and was determined to get it someday. But The Sonys has blew my mind.

@shaunak: there is price difference of 6k between 450d & 500d as mentioned on canon india website with same kit lens.
If you have experience of slr then you should consider either of the two over 1000d.

Availability in India will be an issue, and not sure f Sony prices translate well from USD. But if getting from the US, it would be hard to ignore Sony A55...

Both gear stand good at their level. 500D is a big brother of 450D equipped with digic 4 pro which support over +3 mp with HD video. But these function has markledly reduced the battery life.

500D also have high res. 3'' LCD with 92,000 d with extra coating for protection. Rest are prity much similar to 450D.

I'd stick with what Alex said:

+1

Sony's availability is improving all the time. I will keep a look out for the Sony A55. [Main advantage being no clack-clack of the mirror. Very useful at night :)]

But right now I think I am going to go for the 450D over the 500D, since video is not really a selling point for me. I will go check out both the cameras this weekend.

As always, thanks a lot for the replies.

I was also in the same boat as shaunak but got the 1000D as its for my dad and this being our first DSLR and more than anything my dad would not be using all the bells and whistles of 500D so I went with 1000D and bought an additional 70-300mm lens with the money saved (my dad does bird watching so he needs the zoom lens).

But to be frank after using the 1000D DSLR I was blown away with the same, now I am planing to buy the 550D in the next 3-4 months right now 550D is out of my budget but I am thinking the its pricing will come down around 38-40k with kit lens in the next 3-4 months hope I am not wrong.

In India, Canon is selling 1000d with 18-55mm non IS lens. Avoid this lens and go for IS lens which comes with 500d kit and is also available separately. A week back I bought 1000d body only for Rs.16.5k and bought 18-55 IS separately for Rs.6k.

If your budget permits, also go for canon 50mm 1.8 lens. Really value for money for Rs.5k.

The lenses can remain with you for life while you could change the body.

Yes, wait for a couple of months, the prices of 550d would drop by another Rs.8 to 10k or so. In Delhi, 500d kit is available around Rs.32 -33k but my friend bought it for Rs.45k just seven months ago.

@Funtoon: 550D is available for 42k with kit lens if I am not mistaken... However at that range it makes sense to put in some extra and get a Nikon D90.

Well I am already in the canon camp already have 2 lenses just got the 70-300mm lens for my dad last week, if I buy a new camera (Canon) can exchange lens with my dad hence the preference to 550D though will wait till Dec - Jan, still lots to explore with 1000D for now and happy with the same, photography is just a hobby so trying to keep it within budget :)

BTW Aces170 the 42k price for 550D is it with proper bill and warranty or grey market price.
