WTF

Beginner
I purchased a Lumia 900 from ebay(US) just for the sake of trying out WP7. Out of the box, I was impressed by the phone.Unfortunately, my enthusiasm was short-lived. I tried to ignore some of the short-comings of the phone and the OS at large (which i will talk about in detail,in a short while), but the list of my frustration with WP7 kept getting glaringly long after spending a couple of hours trying to set-up the phone to my personal liking.

One guy has done an awesome job of aggregating a rather large list of shortcomings of WP7 even after the mango update, and I will post it here. But above and beyond that list, what frustrated me the most was, there is absolutely no inbuilt feature in WP7 or any app which will let you hide your videos, pictures and other documents which you would want to keep away from prying eyes. After searching in the Windows Market place, all I could come across was a picture locker app. There is just no way to hide videos and other file types or folders, nor is there any 3rd party app to do it on WP7. Now you'd say, Big deal! YES IT IS! Even good old symbian had folder hiding apps. Its a shortcoming big enough to be a deal breaker for me and i guess to many others who want to carry all their personal pics and videos with them without worrying about anyone else getting to see them videos in full glory in big tiles in the Zune. WTF? This is 2012 for God's sake! Where are my privacy features?

=====================================================================================
And here are the 121 REASONS NOT TO BUY A WINDOWS PHONE 7.5

WP7.5 (Mango) is already in its second generation but it still has many restrictions, limitations and serious usability issues. This is a list of its shortcomings as compared with other smartphone OS in the market. We are not comparing special features or abilities but those which have become the norm for all smartphones and even dumb phones. An Android, Symbian or MeeGo phone would have very few of these shortcomings. An iphone share some restrictions with WP7.5 but is still miles ahead. Even the Nokia N9 running the first generation MeeGo OS is far better with none of the disastrous issues which impact on the sheer usability of the phone.

5. No filemanager. Directory system is totally opaque.

I wonder what use is the fluidity of the OS that many WP7 users seem to highlight when it has such a long list of shortcomings compared to other competing mobile operating systems. It is a shame that WP7 is lacking some features even seen in legacy feature phones.

I tried my best to be accommodating to the shortcomings of this 'promising' OS from Microsoft, but beyond the 121 reasons mentioned above, somethings like the lack of privacy features are downright unforgivable.

I'm back to my Galaxy S2 and Android at large. I can sleep easy even after handing my phone to a friend, because my private files are securely encrypted and under lock and key right inside the phone, thanks to a plethora of apps made just for that purpose.

Android haters tend to publicize the lag in Android phones a bit too much. But I ask you.. What would you rather have? A smart mobile OS which takes maybe a second longer, but does everything you expect it to do, OR an immature wannabe smart OS which is very fluid but lacks features even dumb phones of yesteryears had?

Well, me too got a WP7.5 device (Focus) just for the sake of it. Although yes, there are glaring shortcomings with WP, I think its not as bad as the OP makes it out. Its horrible :P

You just take a chill pill :P or as @comp@ddict says, 121 of them :P

plz not again .. not again tht long list !!

^ Truth hurts? :P

P.S. I had to vent out my frustration, because I was really, i mean really waiting for this device to be in my hands and boy what a major disappointment it turned out to be. $270 down the drain. I thought it was my duty to inform others who are looking forward to get into the WP7 bandwagon to keep their expectations low..way low if they want to avoid disappointment or if they are coming from Android or iOS! WP8 might address a lot of those issues and i'm looking forward to it, but WP7..with all these limitations, i'd think of Microsoft using us all as forced beta testers (read guinea pigs) and nothing else.

I would not care so much about the 121 reasons, but my biggest gripe remains with the lack of any password protection/hide app for files, folders and videos. I have only 2 options as of now to overcome that issue :
1) Lock the phone with a password - Which will make a lot of people i know, suspicious.
2) Not store anything that I would not want anyone else to see. - Thats a bad compromise in this day and age when I know other Mobile Operating systems are perfectly capable of hiding any file I want without having to password lock the whole phone and make people curious. :|

This shortcoming alone is the biggest deal-breaker for me as of now. I have no privacy on a WP7 device. :-/

Well, I have not seen any use for password protection so far, but then each one to his own.

Anyways, when MS sees the total amt of WP phones sold, they might find that a huge percentage might be brought by employees itself :P

---------- Post added at 12:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:27 AM ----------

And btw, in fact I was speaking to @pratzgh1 and i mentioned the same, that i would prefer a far better OS albeit laggy than get stuck to a dumb one. However, had not read your thread at that time :P

---------- Post added at 01:06 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:33 AM ----------

BTW was reading up the comments in the original thread and found out there were some fanatic iDiots even in the WP camp (I used to think they were restricted to Apple wonly :P)

Anyways, here is one who is going to debunk many of the myths.

I knew what I was getting into when I brought focus. so its okay. so far, I have used Android,Symbian,WebOS & Blackberry. Windows phone is the only mobile os i haven't tried, so the inner geek in me, its excited to try a new OS. now, the wait is only for few days :D

Windows Phone Myths Debunked- The Truth : My Nokia Blog

To most of the issues pointed out by the original poster, this guy simply says 'No idea', 'Not sure', ' Coming in WP8' or conveniently brushing them aside as 'not such a big deal'. What good is the 'coming in WP8' comment when all of us know that none of the current phones running WP7 will get to upgrade to WP8? You see, this is the problem with fanboys. The guy is downright biased and wrong while defending his favorite OS on some of the points like "Office mobile is awesome!". It isnt. If you use Word on this app, you'll see how primitive the editing and formatting options are. Quickoffice, Thinkfree office, smartoffice are miles ahead and have way more options, closer to the desktop version of MS Office.

He is again wrong when he says the users on all other platforms are locked to a particular market according to their location. This problem is the most glaring with Windows Phone alone. On Android, there is no such restriction and 95-98% of all apps on Google play store are available, no matter where in the world you reside, except for location specific service apps like netflix, google wallet, pandora etc. And even then, you can simply sideload apps on Android even if they are not available in your location. For ex. Google currents was launched in US only initially. But the word spread on the internet and people around the world could sideload the app irrespective of their location. Also, one can use multiple gmail accounts to access Google Play store on Android, while on WP7 you are stuck to the windows live id with which you sign up and you cannot change the location anymore.

You cannot even keep a backup of your smses. So if your phones dies or gets stolen, all your messages are just gone! Let alone Android and iOS, even good old symbian had sms backup and restore apps.

And ultimately, the thing that has been a PITA atleast for me, and I'm sure to many others is the lack of privacy features as I've mentioned earlier. I wonder what this guy has to say for the lack of privacy apps for your personal files. There is just no way to stop the files from showing up in Zune, open to everyone.

I've still not lost complete faith in Windows Phone and i sincerely hope most of these issues are addressed in WP8, until then, I feel much more comfortable, content and satisfied with Android. I'd rather have an app skip a few frames between screens as long as it does everything I ask it to do, than scratch my head and kick the wall in desperation over an unfinished, severely handicapped beta software labeled as WP7.:-/

As a Windows phone user (and really trying hard not to come across as a fanboy :) ), I can only say - to each his own.

For e.g., before this post, I had never seen anyone make such a hue and cry over privacy. No offense to you, it is totally understandable.

But you must understand what market the Windows Phone is perfect for.

I spend 11-13 hours a day in office. I want seamless integration with Outlook; mails + calendar. Apart from that I want MS Office and MS SharePoint integration. I want access to my 4 personal e-mail accounts on the go (and I don't want to open different apps for that). I want all my contacts in different social networks under one name and I need a decent battery life.

I extensively use FB chat and Whatsapp. I rarely play games. I don't have time to fiddle around with ROMs trying to find the perfect balance of features and usability. I need a smooth, reliable OS with no stutters, no lags, no hang-ups and a beautiful UI out of the box. I need a screen bigger than 3.5".

And I want all this in 15k.

Now, please give me my options.

I am not trying to defend Windows Phone here. There are loads of limitations, though I will still say that, even today, every phone maker has 121 limitations. It all depends on your needs. For e.g. your biggest gripe with Windows Phone has probably not crossed anyone's mind here. Also, because of the very few complications with Windows Phone, all managers in my company have been given a Samsung Omnia W as a replacement for their Blackberry(s). And that is quite a large army of managers! :P

Cannot sync directly with Outlook without syncing to Cloud

Please explain. In my case, I directly entered the OWA link for our company, along with username and password and everything was set up.

I would not care so much about the 121 reasons, but my biggest gripe remains with the lack of any password protection/hide app for files, folders and videos. I have only 2 options as of now to overcome that issue :
1) Lock the phone with a password - Which will make a lot of people i know, suspicious.
So? Big deal if they get suspicious. :)

But, this obviously is a big major concern point for you so I will not argue on this one.

95. Wi-fi disconnects when screen sleeps.

It disconnects if not in use. If I have put apps for downloading/updating, it does everything.

83. Volume up/down buttons cannot be used to zoom in camera (sign of an immature os)

Really now? Immature OS = using volume buttons for zoom in/out?!

69. No haptic feedback for keyboard.

Umm, my HD7 has options for keyboard - sound + vibration.

36. No always visible status bar for battery life, signal strength, carrier, 2G/3G wi-fi, Bluetooth status.
37. Taskmanager has no option to shut down apps you don’t want running in the background.

The first is to optimize screen space for you. Give you the extra pixels. Though the option could be given to us whether to enable/disable it. Secondly, please tell me when you even had to bother which apps were running in the background. Give me one solid example where the phone was becoming slow or laggy and you had to kill apps.

60. Option to output FM radio to speaker is cleverly hidden.

Now, you are just making shit up! :P

immature wannabe smart OS which is very fluid but lacks features even dumb phones of yesteryears had?
Actually, I would ask you this - why didn't you go in for a Symbian from the yesteryears and spend $270 for Lumia 900 or even thinking of Android or iOS? Once you answer that, you'll understand what I am trying to say. All these new OSs have been built from the ground up - Android, iOS and Windows Phone. They are going to take time to be as rich as the yesteryears OSs were. Even Windows phone 6.5 had many features which Windows Phone 7.5 does not have. Give it time. Apple and Android have been here since 2007. Windows Phone launched in 2010.

than scratch my head and kick the wall in desperation over an unfinished, severely handicapped beta software labeled as WP7.:-/

Relax, my good man! Sell it off for a premium and use the S2; which is a damn capable phone in itself. Obviously Windows phone didn't live up to your expectations.

If you had the money and the need/time for a extremely customizable phone, you obviously didn't do your research properly. :)

^^ Couldn't agree more with @Sei.
These things finally wind up as individual's preferences.
I bought N8 with so much confidence in Symbian and also my own exp of almost 7years of using Sym devices. It was ok for a year but then after Belle I was very disappointed.
But then the smart thing to do it recalculate. Is there any other phone in the market which suits your needs and satisfies you in your decided price bracket. If yes go buy it and get rid of the current one.
If not then is there much to do about it other than consoling your self that you have the best possible phone to satisfy your requirements.
I thought many times of going for an android phone and getting rid of N8. But when I weigh my options there is only one thing that I cant compromise on. That's the N8 camera and then I postpone the thought of changing my N8 till I get a more better option.

I am very confident that M$ will do a pretty good job with Windows phone devices also. After using Win7 I was wondering what new they could bring to Win8 but they did a very good job there. Lets hope it will be the same with Windows phones.

(I once even dreamed that Nokia somehow made it possible to install Window on N8 :D )

It all depends on your needs. For e.g. your biggest gripe with Windows Phone has probably not crossed anyone's mind here.

I was trying not to divulge personal information to explain why the lack of this feature is such a pain for me, but..:P Here is the scenario and a very real problem for me. I have pics of my GF on my phone and I am still in college and come from a conservative family. :P I dread the thought of what my parents will say if they ever come across the pics because they are so easily accessible on this phone. On Android, I could simply use Hide It Pro (free) and the pics would be hidden without a trace.

I cannot even lock or hide messages on WP7 like I can on Android. Probably now you will understand why I cannot lock the whole phone and make them more suspicious because parents can be a big deal. :P

Actually, I would ask you this - why didn't you go in for a Symbian from the yesteryears and spend $270 for Lumia 900 or even thinking of Android or iOS?
I do have a Galaxy S2, but unfortunately dropped the phone and cracked some part of the screen. Still works though. I bought Lumia 900 just to try out WP7 and getting another Android device didnt make sense cos I already had one. :)

I didnt really mean to offend the WP7 users.:P I'm not an Android fan boy and that is why i bought the Lumia to try other options. It is just that I had/have high expectations from WP and in my particular case, it didnt live up to my needs. I'm still looking forward to WP8 and hoping that it'll be a more mature platform and address the shortcomings in WP7. :)

Actually, sometimes I find that the phone does become laggy. Dunno why, but it does. However it disappears after some time on its own. Might be due to the huge amount of apps installed. And the disappearing keyboard issue :@

Ive been using the focus as a replacement for my iPhone 4 for past 2 months now . As much as I would agree with the OS not being completely perfect or anywhere close to it (heck even Android / iOS had 100+ shortcomings in their early days ) - on a personal level I can live with most of the short comings or have found alternatives .

But as Sei pointed out , what I am getting out of a phone which I got for just 8.5k -an amazing 4" AMOLED screen, perfectly working e-mails , the very fluid and simplistic yet beautiful UI , the core FB,twitter integration ,the way image gallery works , calender sync etc.

I do miss the lack of apps in market place but then realized that even with the iPhone , most of the apps craze used to be short lived . My only major gripe right now is Whatsapp going offline every once in a while or not getting connected at all probably due to switching between 2g/wi-fi connections . For what Ive got for such a low price, I just cant complain.

Anyways every single mobile platform has it's own short comings and issues , especially during the early days . You buy a mobile for what it has to offer for YOU and only after knowing about it's pros and cons . I personally feel that somewhere down the line Windows Mobile will indeed mature enough to become a threat to Android and iOS.

For now I do miss my iPhone once in a while :P.

PS : Anyone using Focus i917 , having figured out how the maps work exactly ? I cant find any search button in the default Maps app nor been able to look for directions from Pt.A to Pt.B :S.

Nokia is nothing without its good old self created Symbian... It should have sticked to it by doing a total makeover to compete with android, windows and other os...
I still love s60v3/v5 and still using it. :)
Event oday, new apps are created for s60 and there are countless app for it with tones of customization options incl. firmware hacks...:hail:
Dont know what nokia liked in windows or to say did MS offered bribe to nokia...:p

Yup, that is an issue with Whatsapp. Happens with me too. They probably made the app, just for the sake of making it. Who knows? And quite a few updates have been released till now but they have not fixed this.

Hey, I absolutely agree with you . I can imagine the need for privacy too. It can be as simple as having pics of your family or any other things which you don't want to share with every person out there. I get it.

But, I still feel that you should have researched a lot more because these "121 points" have been available all over the net for quite some time! And I had seen them all before buying the phone because it still suits my requirements. Just an FYI, many of the editors at Engadget also use Windows Phone devices as their main handsets. Not trying to prove anything, just saying! :P

I still love s60v3/v5 and still using it. :)
Event oday, new apps are created for s60 and there are countless app for it with tones of customization options incl. firmware hacks...:hail:
Dont know what nokia liked in windows or to say did MS offered bribe to nokia...:p

The only place where Nokia faltered was not being aware of the current market. Apple launched their touchscreen iOS device in 2007. Even today Nokia does not have any device in the market which provides a comparable touch based experience - be it Windows Phone, Android or iOS. The same place where BB faltered.

Secondly, they lost grip of the lower-priced handset market once Micromax, Spice, Samsung etc started coming in with decent products offering more features than Nokia phones at the same price. Most probably, in the end, MS is going to buyout Nokia if they don't come up with a killer product - something on the lines of a Lumia 900 + PureView + Windows 8 at a decent price. Will have to wait and watch. But I feel that will the last chance for them.

I still feel symbian should be recreated by giving a perfect tune-up touch by drastic improvements and advancements and be kept alive until nokia doesnt completely shift its core promisingly to other platforms. Even if nokia shifts to another platform, symbian should be kept in box as its backup os. Scrapping the faithful will do no good. Still today there are plenty nokia symbian lovers

Even Maemo OS should have been kept in mind after symbian b'coz still i dont think so more than 1 out of 10 nokia users are even aware of Maemo or even handled such phones yet (there are not even 5 Maemo nokias out there). So why not make people aware about maemo and launch handful of low to hi end phone on maemo... If people love it then nokia will be in the competition once again and if not then there MS and Symbian to take care of the rest..;)

I dont want nokia to shift to android or windows as it will loose its charm by shifting to such common platforms. Nokia has that potential to bang back again but i guess currently they are lost in the competition by getting pretty insecure in their own ways. They shouldnt panic...what is good today will be phased out tomorrow...hope nokia reads this...:)

Limitations in WP I found irritating

* No USSD code supports.
* No Draft option for SMS
* Numbers not recognized from SMS.
* Unable to transfer pdfs via Zune. I have upload to skydrive - which is again irritating to download using the Skydrive app - which uses IE to download.
* back -back -back -.......... exit

I am fan of Symbian and still using one.
But I am not gonna recommend WP to anyone. I am disappointed.
