Looking for a new laptop in 14 or 15.6 in display size for an Engineering student
Primary purpose (updated : Coding , reading, mild media consumption, NO GAMING, NO AUTOCADING etc..
BUDGET 35 to 50k - cheaper the better ;))
with my limited knowledge ( evident from repeated editions to this main post ;)) I feel..
8gb or 16gb ram (if extendable great)
i5 12th gen or above , or ryzen 5 to 7 - good yet battery efficient so I guess U is the norm there
512gb ssd for startres.. if extra slot is there for extension , would be great
Good vibrant IPS display good for prolonged reading and very mild media consumption..
Good battery
Backlit Keyboard..
Maybe metal upper if fits the budget

you can check the HP 14s and Pavilion 14. Not sure if it has 7730 processor though.

Lenovo has Ideapad and thinkbook range as well.

Or the MSI Modern 14 (build quality will be much inferior to the HP or Lenovo)

Need a very similar one for a CSE Student. Only catch is it needs a 4GB GPU too. Any suggestions ?

sooner or latter, Colleges will start providing laptop from their own, just like now days schools selling school books inflating price astronomically, and you will be unable to buy same config out side as Laptop Brand will customized laptop for that particular Institutions Group or Colleges ONLY.

Yes 40K is out of the question for sure.

Those look like pretty good options. I got a Acer Nitro V about a year back and have been satisfied with it. Apart from one motherboard replacement. Service was pretty good. Tech came home and replaced it for me. Took a week for new motherboard to arrive.

Few points regarding my Acer laptop.
  • It came with 1x16gb ram. This allowed me to upgrade to 32gb with ease instead of 2x8G which is a hassle if you want to upgrade in the future. Lenovo build quality might be better but it would usually come with 2x8gb ram with both slots filled in dual channel configuration. Better to confirm this before buying if you go with Acer.
  • A quick trick to upgrading ram if it comes with 1 ram slot filled. In command prompt run - wmic memorychip get DeviceLocator,PartNumber, Manufacturer, Speed. Mine gives me this

  • Hynix memory was the original Acer installed ram. So I was looking for a Hynix OEM, 5600Mhz ram. After some research I was able to find that Adata primarily use Hynix OEM. So I bought 5600 16gb Adata ram which matched my stock ram perfectly. Dual channel at full speed. Shops wont allow you to plug in ram to check of course so can be a gamble. If ram are not matched it usually defaults to lowest speed which for DDR5 is 3200 Mhz (correct me if I am wrong). Also when doing upgrades like this a physical shop is better as you can ask for a quick replacement and physically check the specs at store before paying instead of online where it would be too late by the time it arrives.
  • Also I always get the extended warranty for a laptop. Those extra 2 years have always been a blessing. Macbook pro 3 motherboard replacements in 3 years. Thinkpad 1 replacement and this acer already one. Looks like a pattern for me. :blackeye:

My college (a small Tier 3 private college) used to give laptops , almost 14 years back. As far as I know, they have stopped the practice now.
