Hello;

I am looking for a good laptop. Kindly suggest.

What's your Budget?
40 -60 K INR

What will be your primary usage for the notebook be?
Web surfing, number crunching using statistical softwares, watching movies, listening to music

What size and weight considerations do you have?
15 to 16 inch, maily a desktop replacement, won't travel much unless I change jobs and move to a new city

Any brand that you prefer, or any brand that you detest? (e.g some would prefer to stay away from Acer or Dell)

No great preferences really. Are ASUS and Gateway available in India? Are they good?

Any other considerations? (e.g Battery life; Widescreen/non-widescreen; Glossy/Matte screen etc.)
Battery life of at least 2-3 hours, core i series of processors
Blue ray player, min 4 GB DDR3 RAM (is it really useful?)

Thanks and regards

Hi...

First of all welcome to TE..

Coming to the point please check the below link , most of what u have wanted are configured in it.

Btw haven't you posted the same thing on NBR..lol.. anyway hope this helps..

Peace~

yup, i have posted the same thing on NBR.

need all the help I can get.

anyway, could you please post a link to the specs? all I could see following the link was a message saying that there are no items in your cart!
or at least write the model name.

You can get the Dell Studio 15 as suggested. The config for Rs 47900 has a core i3 350M processor with 4 GB ram and 500 GB HDD. But i dont think u need to get the 47,900 system. Only difference is 500 GB HDD vs 320 GB and 4 GB ram vs 3 GB in the base system which sells for 40,900.

Edit: Link is here http://www1.ap.dell.com/in/en/home/...aspx?refid=laptop-studio-1555&s=dhs&cs=indhs1

So get the base system and add a blue ray drive for 6400 extra. Upgrade the RAM to 4 GB which costs 1500 extra. 4 GB of ram is the best choice and will give you better performance as it runs in dual channel mode. And if you are going to be watching movies on the laptop itself you can upgrade to a full HD screen(1920X1200) which costs 2k extra.

So total cost comes to 51k. Sounds like the best option to me. HP and acer would also be releasing new laptops based on Core i3/i5 soon i guess. You can wait for those also and decide

Hi guys,

I very interesting discussion is going on here. I would like to add a question.

I am planning to buy a notebook with following features:

Full HD 1080p LED screen with resolution 1920x1080

Size between 15'' and 16''

Blu Ray reader optical drive

HDMI port

4GB DR3 1066MHz memory

500GB 7200rpm SATA Hard disk

3 year global complete cover

I checked Dell Studio 15, Dell XPS 16 and Alienware M15x. There are many guys complaining about heating issues, so I decided not to go for i7-720QM processor. After some thought I am inclined towards Dell Studio with i3-350M processor. It costs me 65K with ATI Radeon HD 4570.

Will this combination run cooler??? Will it be able to play BD Blu Ray movies in Full HD resolution???

Please give your suggestions.

PS: I have the option to buy from US too. But Dell is not costly in India than US. I can opt for other Brands, if needed.

This configuration is available with these processors
Intel® Core™ i3-350M
Intel® Core™ i5-430M
Intel® Core™ i5-520M
Intel® Core™ i5-540M

First of all should I go for Dell studio or not? If yes, then which processor is the right choice?

An i3 processor with shitty 4570 at 65k ? A big NO.

Try if you can find out ACER 5740 with blueray. Should cost you ~52k with 5650 ATI graphics which is much much better than 4570 and DX11 compatible. :)

If you can't find ACER with blueray, try to find Lenovo laptops with i3/i5 and blueray.

Otherwise, try these if you can import from US ->

Newegg.com - ASUS A52JR-X1 NoteBook Intel Core i5 430M(2.26GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory 500GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 - Laptops / Notebooks

Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AS7740-5142 NoteBook Intel Core i3 330M(2.13GHz) 17.3" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 500GB HDD 5400rpm BD Combo Intel GMA HD - Laptops / Notebooks

Thanks, then I should search for more options.

Aspire 5740 is really nice system, but no Full HD screen. International warranty only 1 year. I need to make some customizations in two newegg offers to make as per my needs.
I don't find a place to make changes in these systems, Am I missing something???

If I purchase from US, which Brands offer International warranty like Dell for many years?

ASUS provide 2 years global warranty AFAIK. And you can always extend the ACER warranty too. :)

But why on earth are you searching for Full HD screen ? You have to use microscope to see the test/icons on a Full HD 15.6" screen. 1366x768 is the best for a 15.6". In case you want more screen estate, get the 17.3" ones with 1600x900 resolution. FULL HD laptop screen is just another marketing gimmick unless its a 22" one :P

If you are looking for a desktop replacement, then here are two options (with Blue ray and Full HD ) for you ->

Newegg.com - SONY VAIO AW Series VGN-AW350J/B NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo P7350(2.00GHz) 18.4" 4GB Memory DDR2 800 500GB HDD 5400rpm Blu-ray Disc / Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT - Laptops / Notebooks

Newegg.com - ASUS N90 Series N90Sc-A1 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T9600(2.80GHz) 18.4" 4GB Memory 1TB HDD 5400rpm BD Combo NVIDIA GeForce GT 220M - Laptops / Notebooks

P.S. - You haven't mention your budget so don't blame me for prices :P
