Storage Solutions 16GB Pen drive - Interesting Finding

I got 16 GB GT from Phoenix couple of days back. I tried many single mkv files of 4-8 GB to copy to this drive but it failed at last stage indicating message that drive does not have enough space though it has more than double free space. As I knew already that FAT32 can support upto 4 Gb file only like PS3, I tried to format it in NTFS but no option was available. I went to Device manager-disk drives-optimize for performance in lieu of optimize for quick removal and formatted in NTFS (option became available). BUT SPEED REDUCED TO 50% IN COPYING SAME FILE in NTFS.

Anyone can try this and compare speed in NTFS of pen drive which is 50% of FAT32. It is interesting finding, check it?
 
Its also recommended to have your flash drive formatted in FAT, since NTFS is a Non-Journaled File system and needs more read/write cycles to access data, thereby lowering life of the drive.
 
Exactly...In NTFS, any data u write would also be written to the NTFS logs at the same time, hence will consume more read-write cycles for the same piece of data. Well, this does help in data recovery but the drive becomes significantly slow and wears out early.
 
There is a cluster size issue which I'd faced with NTFS a long time ago i.e. my drive was formatted with a 512 byte cluster size. That really kills performance in NTFS. NTFS requires a 4K min cluster size to function properly IMO.

Not sure it this is the case with a flash drive but maybe you can check and confirm.
 
Well, i had it done with 4096 cluster size but still its slow. :no:
After that i prefer FAT and whenever i need to transfer big files, just format it to NTFS. :)
 
Even better. Use FAT all the time :) In case you need to carry somehting >4Gb. Use something like winrar to split it first?

here is somethating i ALWAYS do
select files, addto archive (winrar), set path as the pendrive destination, select compression -> STORE, select split archives and click on OK. it wont comress anything, but get really really good speeds :) I use it especially when I have lots of small files which take an eternity to copy. in the destination machine, just open and unrar
 
Ah... my 'thing to learn for the day' :) (didn't know that)

So is it recommended to have an external HDD also formatted as FAT? (have a 160GB one)

But I cant use WD HD player that way :ohyeah:
