i am planning to get 1tb soon now. only 2 options come in mind. have read too much about both. i want something nice and very reliable for data backup, pics and movies. so would love the ones that fail less. options are :

Seagate 1TB Desk : rs. 5900

OR

Western Digital 1TB Essential : rs 5900

prices are ditto seagate has more warranty i know that but which one to get ultimately. let me know asap. gonna mostly get it when i get the speakers as well.

if i am not wrong ,newer Seagate drives have lesser warranty..ie-only 3 yrs.

so i would suggest you to go with Western Digital.

anyways since its gonna be a backup/ data storage drive..

reliability will matter more than speed\performance. :)

Go for Seagate ST31000333AS model.

3 platter, ~100mb max real transfer speeds and 5 year warranty.

I bought the same from NP at 5350 :D

Go with Samsung. Why? Dunno. I'm just following the leads.

Seriously, I'd think both brands are the same if same warranty+prices since speed is not a factor here. Reliability should also be similar for both. Go for any brand u're comfortable with.

the votes seems simlilar my point is which ones fail less and who here have had any of these over 3 or 5 years and not have failed ?

WRONG :) Seagate EXTERNAL drives still have the 5 years warranty applicable :D You can google for the press release or check the seagate site as well :)

I would go with the seagate drive...
Resons:
1. Seagate drives look much better and are much sleeker compared to WD.
2. they have the light that glows when the Hard drive is active (same as WD) only the lights in seagate are cooler and look better. U can also switch off/on the lights using the utility software supplied by seagate.
3. Somehow I just like seagate (external) over WD:)

my 2 cents...go with seagate

both seagate [strike]and wd[/strike] internal have only 3 yrs warranty. and hdd failure is on your luck/ usage. It could fail or not. Not everybody's drives fails.

edit: From WD site-

ENTERPRISE, DESKTOP, AND NOTEBOOK DRIVES IN INDIA HAVE A 5YEAR WARRANTY

Nice reasoning. No really!!

I'd vouch for WD. :p

Can someone please clarify, the site said WD drives have 5 year warranty. What is it 5 or 3?

And any ideas if the 1 TB 7200.12 or the WD 500 GB per platter drive are out yet?

If you are still undecided have a look at this.
WD Product Line

I personally prefer WD because of its onsite warranty means just you'll have to register a complain and send the device by courier and you will get the replacemeny without any shipping cost if the product is under warranty. Its useful if you Seagate Service Center is not available in your area.

My choice for 1TB
My Book Home Edition 1 TB Hard Drives ( WDH1CS10000 )
because of its triple interface, eSATA gives you the faster data transfer speed and on this particular model you'll get three years warranty.
