Hi

I ordered a 2 TB USB 2.0 ext HDD online just a few days back and I'm having a small problem with it. The ext HDD is a Seagate GoFlex Desk 2 TB HDD with the USB 2.0 dock.

The internal HDD inside the enclosure is a brand new one (looking at health status in CrystalMarkInfo and power up count which was zero). Btw the internal HDD is a 7200 rpm (contrary to what I read about it being a 5900 rpm Barracuda LP green drive). The HDD is good and performs decently. But I'm having a slight problem with it. The HDD heats up very quickly and it touches 55 deg Celsius i about 1 hr - 1.5 hr while I'm transferring stuff to it.

CrystalMarkInfo shows 55 deg as a dangerous temp (red symbol).

The operating temp for the drive is listed as 0 deg Celsius - 60 deg Celsius. But at 55 deg it shows me warning. Even HD tune pro pops a message in windows taskbar citing dangerous operating temp. Somewhere I have read that HDD can take even upto 69 deg celsius temp. My friend has a 2.5+ yrs old 1 TB Maxtor Basics HDD which he has used like crazy and its still in good shape. He tells me that he connects and leaves it on for hrs together without bothering about heating. CrystalMarkInfo even shows that drive has once touched 67 deg Celsius (from S.M.A.R.T attributes).

I'm now worried whether this overheating may reduce the lifespan of the drive. I now use it very sparingly. I transfer some GB's of data to it and if temp goes too high (above 55 deg celsius) I switch it off. But I'm not happy working this way.

I also have to mention 2 faults of the HDD:-

1. No ventilation in ext casing (which is why I thought they would always ship 5900 RPM drives).

2. Bad firmware - Once the drive reaches a particular temp due to read/writes, it never drops even though the work is completed and drive is idle. Also drive power management is poor.

I knew of these 2 faults before but I was expecting to get a 5900 RPM inside and hoping it wud help a bit. Also I had no choice as I bought it now (was waiting for a transcend storejet but it was out of stock for more than a month).

So is this 'overheating' normal and I'm freaking out for no reason? Or is there something genuinely wrong with the drive?

Btw I havent pushed it beyond 55 deg celsius to see whats the max it goes to. I was a bit scared.

Also I was supposed to get the USB 3.0 dock for it from the US. Will that change anything with regards to this heating problem??

Please advise.
