256 MB RAm : No XP Please

Arre Dada, boot in XP and check na...you have XP anyway....

Troubleshooting on 98SE is difficult since nearly noone here has a 98SE machine

Anyway, you can also try looking under the Hard disk settings in the device manager (Not the ATA controllers), maybe it is hidden there in 98SE...

I know it is there somewhere in Device manager, just that it has been several years since I used 98

I appreciate your patient Superczar,

You peopel just make any one HW professional if some one spend 1 hrs daily with you.:hap2:

But I am really dumbo. :( I clean install 98 after formatting my HDD. By boot XP do you mean put XP cd in CD Drive and boot from there?

My Friend is using windows xp on his P4 2.0 ghz , 256 mb ram , 20 gb Hdd and its working Like a Charm even with all the eye Candy Turned on ! Hell my other friend is using xp on his P3 800mhz , 128 mb ram and even there with the eye candy turned off its working very decently ! so Obviously there is something wrong with ur system ! Check the Hdd as czar suggested ! on ur config it should work perfectly smooth !

Ran xp with 128 mb ram for 2 years. worked flawlessly.hell even i did with 64 mb but it was pain in a$$.
my rig was 2.66 ghz northwood 128 mb ram 40 gb hdd and intel 845gvb2 mobo. :)

i have cel 2.4 , mercury 845 mobo, 40 Gb HDD , 256 MB RAM , 5200 FX 128 MB, and i play games on this conifg without any problem, ofcourse in win XP i play games like FIFA 2006 , TM nations, PES 5 , have played many heavier games also. and the normal performance of the PC is also very good , you have P4 2.4 XP should be as smooth as silk on your PC compared to my PC

I am running XP on 1.6Ghz with 128MB since 5yrs, it is running very fine, stop all the unnecessary background services and in System Properties > Advanced > Visual Effects > Adjust for best performance.

ya i agree the 256ram computers runnin on xp,most of the games that i have are still runin... and xp is the best os(windows) out here try and switchin over to xp itself but try gettin a better ram upgrade say abt 512 that might sonle ur prob as for nw.....

the latest soft in the wrld need atleast xp so pls try and switch over to xp and pls increase ur ram to 1gb if ur a nutcase abt computers and stuff

Yes that is right, it takes that much memory right after you install and run it with nothing running. Which is exactly why I (and ofcourse Microsoft) said that you MUST have 1GB of memory and preferably 2GB. Otherwise you feel like running XP on 256. And how would you play games without 2GB.

Another Vote for No XP (very slow) with 256MB Ram Read Here

my suggestions to u :
first of all get a IDE 80 pin connector if u r HDD supports ultra ATA(UDMA 5)...

then turn of services which u dnt use.to this go to start --run--services.msc
and there turn off unnecessary services...cauz this well help u a lot i am sure...
the list of services tht can be disabled..have been attached in a file...

also if u r boot -up is slow go to MSCONFIG and disable booting of unnecseassry services...
and last thing..just go to taskmanager(ctrl+alt+del.) and check how much of Physical RAM is being used..as well as page file ...and accordingly..increase virtual memory/page filing...and just end unnecsaary processes eating up u r RAM...
HOPE ALL THIS ..WILL HELP...U OUT...
note : plzz have a look at the attached file...too..!
