Using Ubuntu 9.04 with nVidia 180.44 binary drivers on GF8400GS. VDPAU, 3D game performance are all good but the only issue is poor 2D performance. Window resize, maximize and scrolling is poor, (both in metacity and compiz). Tried some options mentioned in this page but still same issue. Anyone found a fix for this issue?

I am expecting no reply for this given the market share of desktop linux n nvidia :P

LOL...

try searching for nvidia settings/tweaks to add to your xorg.conf , im sure there is some setting causing unusual slowness with 2D since it works for most people...

you could post your xorg.conf here and someone might notice what the problem is...

edit: when you say its "poor" is the speed low or is there glitches/flicker? you may need to enable vsync in multiple places (opengl especially) in the nvidia-settings applet somewhere in your gnome menus...

One more thread, there are lots actually in the net, none have proper fix. The previous link had some hacks to give better if not the best performance.

speed is low, no flicker or glitches, its only 2D problem, 3D is fine so still opengl comes into picture? slow speed is for windows being drawn, resize, scrolling. I think the v-sync is on, need to check once and confirm.

This problem has bought one interesting analysis of various gfx card in linux. will start another thread for that.

you mentioned the poor performance is in metacity/compiz? thats why i assumed "desktop effects" is enabled in some form and believe opengl is enabled even though you are doing "2D" operations like moving/resizing...

hmm well i meant was that when i am using compiz or disable it and switch back to metacity there performance is same/no improvement.

ok understood. the nvidia settings applet has multiple places to enable vsync for opengl and non opengl as well.. try playing around with that....
