AMD’s Ryzen 7 9800X3D CPU Unexpectedly Burns Out; User Says He Has No Clue Why This Happened

A user posted his damaged and burned Ryzen 7 9800X3D pic on Reddit, sharing his unfortunate incident that happened under a month after building a PC.

It looks like burning and melting issues are common these days. From melting RTX 5090 connectors to burnt CPUs, it seems as if every piece of hardware is prone to such a problem. Even though burnt Ryzen 7 9800X3D chips aren't common, a user was unfortunate enough to see hundreds of dollars burning in front of his eyes.

Reddit user u/t0pli published a post recently, reporting that his AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D got burnt suddenly. According to the user, he was watching a TV series on his PC when it suddenly switched off. The user found out that both his processor and the socket were damaged as a result of burning. For reference, his rig consisted of a Ryzen 7 9800X3D and an ASRock Nova X870E motherboard, but he did inform in the comments that he hadn't overclocked the processor.

Furthermore, he was using one of the latest BIOS versions, 3.16, but that's unlikely to be something related to the issue. However, he did turn on AMD EXPO for memory overclocking. Still, memory overclocking is unlikely to cause such big damage to the CPU and the socket. As per the information, his PC was less than a month old and was running quite smoothly without hitting high temperatures.

He recently updated that he sent the CPU for RMA to the local store, but the investigation will need one or two more days before they can give it back. Gamers Nexus has already reached out to the user to buy the parts for the investigation, but we will have to wait for the user to get his stuff back before sending these to GN.

As far as what may have happened, @9550pro says this could be due to a short circuit, as the burnt area in this particular area is the VDDCR. In previous cases, the burnt location was different and was thought to be due to incorrect CPU seating. Therefore, today's case is a bit different and will need more investigation.
