I m a humble lay person with minimal tech knowledge and all I wanted to do was buy a assembled PC. But with so many recommendations pouring in from all sides, I am getting more and more confused.:S
My basic config so far is a
AMD X4 620
Biostar TA790GX A3+
transcend 2 gb RAM ( for starters.. in a month or two will add 2GB more)
SMPS: Gigabyte Superb 460W

now for the graphics card. Some people have suggested I go with the 4850 1GB coz it gives me more VRAM and some have suggested that the 4870 512MB coz it is more powerful. I have no clue which is better. ( I am not a hardcore gamer but would play games occasionally and would like to have some new games for e.g. dragon age : origins.)
So which one should i go for. pls suggest.

And please tell me the price of both the cards too.

What monitor you will be using?
For 19" display even 9600GT/HD 4670 will do fine as most games now a days are good PC ports.
For 22" @ 1650x1050,get Sapphire/MSI HD 4850 1 GB DDR3(8k aaprox.)
If you have full HD display then get MSI/Sapphire HD 4870 1GB GDDR5(10.5K).If you purchase HD 4870,you will also need a better power supply ,minimum Corsair CX400(3.3K),Cooler Master real power pro 460(3.8k) or better get VX 450(4.2K)

Ok. Thanks. I will be using a 22" inch Benq. But I checked on theitwares.com and the price difference between the 4850 1gb and 4870 512mb is almost 2k.

I don't have that kind of budget. So i will settle for 4850 i guess. my budget is max 8 k

Thanks all for ur help and sorry for my unresearched query.

Ok. Here we go again. :) Here is something new. Why don't I just ask someone to assemble a rig and send it to me ? :)

Thanks for pointing it out. I have had enough. I will ask my bro (who happens to be a comp engineer) to give me whatever he wants. Amen. N thus ends my comp assembling efforts.

Thanks to all for your replies.

AMD X4 620

Biostar TA790GX A3+

transcend 2 gb RAM ( for starters.. in a month or two will add 2GB more)

SMPS: Gigabyte Superb 460W

GFX: 4850 .

Will work just fine.

4870 w/o question. Big performance gap b/w 4850 and 4870 for the price diff of 1.5k [512 vs 512].

CHeck Deltapage. 4870 512 XFX is priced at 8k+ ship. There is a GO goin on for the same here. Check that.

Your proccy is a 90w tdp one and giga 460 shud be just enuf for a 4870.

Go for a ATI 4870 512 MB or i will say why don't you for a new generation i.e ATI 5770, not much difference in price and i think ATI 4870 512MB is dis-continue NOT SURE

People generally fall for the brand name XFX. especially in India. But most of the members have reported about the nightmare of after sales services which is maintained by Rashi Peripherals.

For a descent gaming experience on a 22", a 4850 will also suffice.

But if you want to play games at maximum details, then i suggest a 4870 for full HD gaming in all its glory. And for this, you will definitely need to upgrade your PSU to atleast a 450W Corsair or any other reputed brands.

And FYI, there are very few things that are as much fun as assembling a comp urself and then using it to play your favourite game :ohyeah:
So, don't ask you bro and do it urself. :bleh:
