Graphic Cards 4870 gives BSOD while underclocking

ive been trying to underclock my 4870 to save power.
I used rivatuner and moved the slider to extreme left. It runs fine until next restart [usually after min of 2 days].
On bootup after welcome screen , the rivatuner startup ask permission, and as soon as i clock "allow" it ll give BSOD within nxt 10 sec with some display card related message in BSOD each time.

is it that the GPU is pumped with same vcore after underclocking, as when it used to consumes when on normal clocks? Is there ny card bios update for Sapphire 4870 to reduce the idle clocks ?

There is no problem in overcloking my card. OC like a charm, and oober stable.
Also ive noticed a temp drop from 46c idle to 32~33c idle on underclocking. The card has never gone above 62c even after max load and OCed.

plz help, as im using this rig as a download machine too.

dude.....the gddr5 on the hd4870 doesnt underclock very well.......and only reducing the memory clocks will help you in saving power, core clock doesnt have any effect on that....you should try to flash your bios using RBE and change the voltages accordingly......if you try to decrease the clocks of memory directly it is bound to give errors....

it doesnt have any effect on the perfomance in games as long as you modify only the 2d clocks...the clocks will rise automatically when you play a game...there are many different clocks in the bios meant for different purposes....so you better look for the default 2d clocks and only modify those...........

2nd clock, but where?

if u meant on rivatuner, then there is only one clock selection [3d performance in dim].

ive seen option to tweak idle and load clocks on my nvidia cards, and there were even some 3~4 clock modes on my 8600GT on lappy.

Though there isnt seperate tweak on rivatuner, i can see the core being reduced to 500mhz when in idle through gpuz. But mem clocks remains the same at 900.

There is no BSOD if i keep core above 450 and mem above 500. Nythin below than and probability of BSOD increases. Will powerconsumption be significantly be reduced on downclocking core to 450/550 from 750/900 ?

i meant when you edit the default bios file through RBE you will see around 6 to 7 different modes for 2d, gaming, booting, and hd viewing.....every mode has its own clocks and voltages so you should match it with the idle default clocks...there will be a limit till you can decrease the voltage so its safe to modify the voltages....be sure to backup your original bios file in any case of mishaps.....and yes you should be able to save as much as 25-30 watts by doing this....

will i void warranty by doing so?
btw how to load the default bios in case of mishaps?

i dont think it will void the warranty as sapphire themselves provide updated bios in their site.....and as for the mishaps i havent seen many cases where flash has gone wrong so i dnt have that practical knowledge but i do know the theoritical way which is a bit critical..

I m using rivatuner and running at 325/225 clocks @ 1v idle and defaults at load

The gddr5 memory consumes lotta power....decreasing core clock barely saves couple of watts.......it was noticed by underclockers that reducing memory clocks gave significant reduction in power consumption.....lesser volts to the card ofcourse reduced the power consumption too...but the max effect was wen memory clocks wer reduced.

You can make use of rivatuner to decrease clocks and tweak voltage too...

4870 has lotta sensors and voltera voltage regulators so u can tweak the voltage on the fly...

this link would help you

Using a custom vbs scripts and rivatuner you can achieve this.

Rite now m saving 40+w on idle....

No need for bios editing etc...u can just use 2 shortcut keys on kbd for 2d idle and 3d modes.

wow

thnx yaar,

this is exactly what im looking for.

btw how is your TRU120A performing? mine does seems to be even close to the SCCF. dunno why. goin to switch back to CCF.

btw, i mailed Sapphire technical team and this is what i got as reply.

Dear Sir :

Sorry but we are following the design and rule of AMD to adjust the clock and voltage of the card to have the powerplay feature.

We cannot allow to adjust this for you.

As you know , your friend caused BSOD after adjusting the settings with 3rd party application , he is lucky that not damaged the card, if so , he will lose the warranty protect because he changed the settings that not approved by the manufacturer.

Thanks.

btw the friend i mentioned is imaginary :D

^^TRU120A is performing fair enough...i m using not so good TIM....idles arent that great but load temps are good...fan does make a diff....I had been using a 120mm 115cfm fan with it.

^^Awesome find wingzero :)

Thanx:)

Note : the method would work only for non ref 4870 designs...with voltera controller.

still not tried the hacks

just using rivatuner to clock down

minimum clocks im using are 400/2000

ny better available with the hacks? i havnt touched the voltages, just underclocked with the slider.

OMG dude...GDDR5 is the least power consuming GDDR "x" yet....

the Core sucks up all the power...
