Hello all,
I have two HDs SATAs. 80GB and 500 GB Seagate. From yesterday onwards, 500GB HD started giving problem for me. OS was not booting up saying some error. I have OS running on 80 GB. First I thought some OS drivers corrupted and tried repair and reinstall. But still could not boot up. And once I could boot up after installing the os, then it didnt show the second HD. Then I removed it now its working fine. But what to do to get the huge data I have stored on the 500GB? How to recover? No Idea whats wrong with the HDD.

Please help.
regards,
Anand :(

Is the hdd showing up in BIOS? can you check the power cables and the sata cable is fixed properly?

If not in BIOS then your hdd may have a fault. See if it makes weird sounds/ clicks that you may not have heard before.

Also if you have the serial no. handy check on seagates website:

Serial ATA (SATA) Troubleshooter | Seagate

this is their sata troubleshooter

if yours is from an affected series you may have to flash firmware:

be warned highly risky operation

Thanks for the info. I will check with Seagate.

The problem is if I plugg in the problem HDD while PC is running, the system will hang. But power cable is not disconnected. No issue if I have not connected the SATA cable of the second HDD.

The disk is purchanced in 2008 October. So far no issues.

I will check the BIOS detection as well.

Yup mine too was the same....crashed recently....@anand: My drive showed similar symptoms before dying on me....I could not boot off it at times...system used to hang etc etc...sometimes the other hdd didn't get detected.... The first post is a little unclear- please clarify if you can still boot with the 500Gigger when the second drive is disconnected. If not so, it may be that your drive is either dead or close to it. I was lazy enough not to back my data up and lost all of it when it crashed... Best way to go for backup would be to get some good quality DVDs and Burn !!!

Infact my OS is on the first SATA 80 GB. The second SATA is giving problem. If I connect second HDD, then the bootup from first HDD hangs... Just shows the windows bootup logo. No progress bar movement. And the picture is blurred.
Burning DVDs are not a good option for longer storage. Afaik, magnetic storage is better for long time storage.
Now I plan to take backup in HDDs (internal or external,) which will not be connected to the system always.

But the last question is, how to recover the data on the 500GB now?

Mine is Barracuda 7200.11. In the seage website I have ordered for a replacement. Have warranty upto 2013. But how to recover the data before sending for replacement?
