Our 67th Independence Day is on the way. But what about the country, how we have done and her people in these 67 years??
Your thoughts on the good, the bad and the ugly? Shoot away! Keep the thread clean, please! :P

Corrupted and rotten to the core and beyond. Cannot believe that I saw bad attitude even at IGI airport where relatives of powerful people showed dominance at duty free shop. IMO there are only 2 options left now - know a powerful person or ignore, accept all the sh1t that happens here everyday.
I, on my part, try to show em(sym)pathy, helpfulness and consideration to all class of people and to the environment nonetheless.
I wish I had emigrated when I had the chance.

Since you mentioned 67 years, still alive and kicking. Not many would have thought that at the outset. Improved in many ways since. Looking to further improve. We are the I in BRICS. Just think of the other countries in that list and compare how we do in the freedom stakes since day 1.

Just need to get our asses into gear and stay at it for the next twenty. New administration is a breath of fresh air. This I'day should be a break from the past. Things can only get better. Lots of hope.

Frequent power cuts, terrible internet, pathetic roads, littered streets, polluted rivers, poverty, overpopulation, inflation, crappy educational system, corrupt politicians, brain dead movie industry, no respect or concern for wildlife and natural treasures.
Beautiful land ruled by small minds while we watch helplessly and type this on our keyboards.

Well, India in the geopolitical shape that we know it today didn't even exist that way till the Europeans came here. The earlier Hindustan during moghul or earlier periods was limited to northern and central parts of the country. Even so it was always a bunch of warring provinces whose rulers were always greedy to grab their neighboring provinces. That's why it was possible for the East India company to so easily take control of the entire region. In a sense, you can say that the Independence day is actually the formation day of a entirely new country that we know as the present day India.

So what did we achieve or prove since that time?

- We have proved that we are utterly inefficient at ruling ourselves.
- We have proved that the laws formulated for the Europeans and adopted by us are utterly unsuitable for us as they are too weak or too dependent on ones own self conscience and were more suitable for people who have some semblance of self respect and pride (rather than ego derived from self delusion) and capable of repenting and learning from their mistakes
- We have proved that as the place of origin of discrimination from the ancient times, it will continue being to be the most active havens of discrimination and that it will keep its ill practices alive at any cost.
- We have proved that given sufficient chance, there are enough number of people who would take the country and Human civilization back to its most darkest barbaric and savage roots and more importantly that the country is already on the journey to that point.

This is how I think we have progressed.......

We have just accepted corruption as a way of life.

Basically as a nation for natives of India, it is a useless notion...!

Our worse metric has been the caste system. Grooaaan...! It is still permeable and existent in all walks of society and the way we Indians govern our selves on a daily basis. By the way, I am a high caste (sic.?) person, but abhor what this holds and curtails. Gross....!

India is progressing on a high vector, backwards....! Useless, nation it is.

Not only the caste system, there is no value for human life here. Every single person is always bending the rules. People are only concerned about themselves and nothing else.Things will never change here because corruption is the way of life.

If not for my parents, I would leave this country and never come back...

Have we really gotten independence ? :/
Depends how job secure the govt in your state is. Think of it in terms of degrees rather than absolutes. It could be argued that with RTI we are more free than earlier. As for taking on vested interests and their control over the status quo, there are pros & cons.

Winston Churchil on Indian independence:

"Power will go to rascals, rogues, freebooters. . . .
All leaders will be of low caliber & men of straw. . .
They'll have sweet tongues & silly hearts. . .
They will fight amongst themselves for power & the two countries will be
lost in political squabbles. . . .
A day would come when even air & water will be taxed."

And we are almost there.

#LegitKoschan Saar.
I sometimes wondered what kind of independence freedom we fought for from the British rule. I mean sure the Britishers divided us and ruled us but hey they were able to rule us as one. What kind of govt here now have been able to do that? People of one community fighting against each others and this being exploited by political parties to garner votes. Political parties throwing shit at each other while paying utter nonsense to the people. Different parties have ruled but no satisfactory govt till now. And I doubt that corruption and mismanagement was this high during the British rule.
The funny thing is her people of one generation wishes for the next generation to try to change the situations but its more like things are getting worse by the generation lol.
The incumbent BJP/NDA alliance ruled India then before Congress/UPA came to power. And now BJP/UPA is back on power again. Not a fan of Modi but I wish him and his govt. the very best!

PS: if this helps our dear bro Pakistan who got Independence a day earlier than us isn't doing any better. :P XD

f***-all place.

I would do anything to get out, and never ever come back.
I have the same sentiment, but I'm also very attached to this nation. I like its rich heritage and languages and history, but I hate its bigoted hypocritical culture. I like a few people here, adore some, but I also dislike many. I like the extra effort people put in here to come up in life, but am disappointed at the even greater effort put by others to drag others down. I like the various food choices India offers, but also disappointed at the same time with how close minded people here can be to other culinary choices. I love being an Indian, but I ain't proud of being one.

Conflicting emotions.

Talking of foods I would have migrated if it had not been for my family and foods. :D

I don't think its that bad.I have been to China,SEA,AustraliaEU,US,Nordics etc and still prefer my place in Kerala. It was fun for an year or two in each place. We usually think other places are perfect because they don't have the same problems as ours, but they have different ones. We want the life od Scandinavia, with salary of USA and holidays of France. That's a bad comparison.

I am still proud of the fact that i am part of country which is growing and evolving. Yes,these impediments like psyph3r mentioned will be pulling it down but it is our spirit that keeps it going.
Guys, the India we all dream of will be true one day and i have just one thing to say :-
