Hi,
With Introduction of new iPhone 3GS, the prices of iPhone 3G 8GB model was been halved. its now available in US for $99 USD.However,I am aware that's with a two-year contract price only available in US.

I wanted to know what would be price of this model without contract for Indian users.if it available freely so I can import it?
Or maybe Vodafone & Airtel will also cut prices, so that that we can get it in india only without hassles of importing.
your thoughts?

It is for the contracted version.

If you want, you could

Get Phone = 99$

Pay first month bill ~= 90$

Pay Early Terminateion fee = 175$

So total will be 365$.

Does AT&T unlock your phone after that or will it just remain contract free?

AT&T will unlock your phone if you tell them you are traveling abroad,

though I cannot be certain if they'll do it within a month or two of getting a contract.

Forget about unlocking, if the phone is bought from AT&T then you would need to return it back to them, even after paying the termination fees and stuff..:p

If bought through apple then only you can keep the phone, even then bought from Apple phones are also locked with AT&T....

This possible ?

Get a 99$ iPhone 3G 8GB @ 99USD..

And go in for the relatively cheaper 2year 2G contarct (with AT &T)

I think the older contract is only cheaper by 10$ per month and it's not available to the newer customers anyway.

This is not true. Once you buy the phone, either from AT&T store or Apple store, you get to keep it.
And in many cases, the early termination fee is waived if you have been a customer of AT&T in good standing for 2+ years.

About unlocking on termination: I'm not sure, I'll have to check.

even if one can unlocked version for about $300USD or around Rs15-17k. its a good deal as the kind of value that comes with an iPhone. also its way ahead of its competitors like nokia 5800.

I would be definitive buy it. but i don't where to look:(

@Smith

If your words are to believed, then there would be no need to pay termination fee right?

And I believe it's also partly waived if you're leaving the country (where its bought, we'll assume USA for simplicity) for good. You'll have to prove that though.

I did some Digging:D

Here are the Exact Terms & Conditions of AT&T

Terms Applicable to AT&T Nation/FamilyTalk® GSM Plans: Credit approval required. Subscriber must live and have a mailing address within AT&T's owned network coverage area. An early termination fee of $175 applies if service is terminated before the end of the contract term. For service activated on or after May 25, 2008 the Early Termination Fee will be reduced by $5.00 for each full month toward your minimum term that you complete. If phone is returned within 3 days, activation fee will be refunded. If phone is returned within 30 days in like-new condition with all components, early termination fee will be waived. All other charges apply. Some dealers impose additional fees. iPhone returns will be subject to a 10% restocking fee, except where prohibited.

But still no info about the phone would unlocked after paying that hefty termination fee :|

Yes, you do have to provide a proof of residence at your new location to waive the termination fee.

@Gaurish, I know a bunch of people who've left for India this last month and have done this.

Like I mentioned in this thread before, they do unlock it for you if you say that you are visiting another country. (I am on AT&T and I had checked for when I planned to visited India.)

I Have PMed KMD with a request to work out some nice deal, lets see what he has to say.
btw, I think in INDIA Vodafone & Airtel would be reducing prices soon as new version 3GS would be available here as well

You're free from the contract once you pay the termination fee, but the unlocking bit is an issue. I'm currently using T-Mobile, and they only gave me the unlock code for my Blackberry Curve after 90 days of use, so getting AT&T to unlock the phone is going to be tricky.
