We, at Bhavan's College, Andheri (West), Mumbai, have taken an initiative to launch our first Film Festival. A hearty welcome to all at Ray Film Festival 2010, which will be held on 23rd, 24th and 25th of February.

This year's theme for the Festival is Satyajit Ray, to whom we have chosen to pay a tribute. The above is but a portion of our work, which will be showcased sooner or later.

Now coming to the main part. All college students are allowed to participate. Ray Film Festival is a National event as of now, and is open to all college students from all over India. So, if you are into making films, please send in your entries.

A word to all photographers, you can send in a pictoreel film too. This is a series of pictures, with a background narrative or music or both.

wow, good initiative. Satyajit Ray being one of the finest film makers the world has ever seen, still very few indians(except bengalis) are aware of his classic works!! Bets of luck for the fest!!
 
try to include all feluda movies -- they were and still are a big hit! try getting the old ones with feluda being played by soumitra chatterjee - the news ones with sabyasachi chakroborty(the actor who played Tabu's father in Namesake) are not as good as the original ones which were directed by satyajit ray himself.

i wish you the very best and wish i could come for the film fest!
 
Good to hear that you guys opted for Satyajit Ray.

Ray's work has been appreciated by many globally known film making institutes

We need to do a lot more to make ppl aware abt our own filmmakers.

Indians themselves arent properly aware of achievements they shd have looked up long before.

Good stuff.

Go on then, name as many Indian directors as you can that are in Ray's league :)

Thanks a lot. I myself have not seen Ray's films much, so it is as much a learning experience for me as it will be for any of the attendees.

Well, the sad news is that we can screen only two films of Mr. Ray. :( One on 23rd evening and the other on 24th evening at 6.30pm approximately. Entry is free for all with a valid photo identity card.

I have heard of Charulata being Ray's interpretation of Tagore's novel. A version of Charulata was directed by Mr. B.K.Giri for Doordarshan, which is said to be very close to the novel. Mr. Giri says that the novel is a screenplay in itself. :)

Yes, you hit the nail right in the head. Our motto is to have an Indian director as the theme every year. :)

Adoor Gopalakrishnan and quite a few others.

I would even dare say Anurag Kashyap, but honestly all these were/are great directors. To compare them is not a wise thing to do really. :)

I repeat: Please do come to our Film Festival if you are free. If nothing, then please try and make it to the screening. The events will be on all day, which will comprise of students films (competitive entries). If you are the kind of person who loves to watch upcoming talent in cinema, then also you are welcome. :)
 
I've tried to watch and appreciate Ray's movies but honestly I was more bored than entertained. Apur Sansar is probably my favorite of the ones I've seen especially because Sharmila Tagore looks so good in it and it is the least depressing of the trilogy.

As far as underrated Indian directors go, John Abraham definitely deserves a mention. Too bad his movies didn't get decent distribution. Agraharathil Kazhuthai was excellent.
 
I doubt i can find too many of the same league, but Shyam benegal is another one i do admire. Nishant movie of his got me hooked. That movie led me to Ankur.

Girish Karnad too is another person. Utsav really was well made.

Not all serious movie lover.. Hrishikesh Mukherjee and few others too are worthy but these few are my fav.

Any more effort needed blr_p ..? :P
 
if its two movies it has to be - apu shonshar and include one feluda movie atleast - the crowd would love a feluda movie - try screening shonar killa or joy baba felunath.

What I know is that we won't encounter any problems with copyrights as we are conducting a free screening (no commercialism involved), but we just want to be foolproof.

No comparison at all as its apples to oranges.

But you must have some rules to define what makes a great director as you have selected one already and most likely will do so in the future.

What is it about these directors that makes them great :)

I expect that they have all made some sort of unique contribution to the art of film making rather than a result of a poll.
 
Yes, they have made some brilliant films, which have often been reflective of the society and where it needs improvement or have made excellent contributions to Indian cinema, both to the technique of filmmaking as well to the process of storytelling. The best way to know their contributions is to watch their films, which are more like poems. Their meaning differs from person to person. :)

Its interesting you characterised their scripts as poems, don't think i've heard that before.
