a chance for TE to acquire more user base -AUDIO VIDEO

I am wondering if this is right time for TE to expand its avenues, as one of the Indian AV forum closed its classifieds section & lot of members from that forum are looking for other options.

May be this is right time for TE to jump in & create a sub section or forum to accommodate the needs. I understand this will be lot of burden on the existing mods, but I am sure lot of members from the other forum or the current mods of that forum will be happy to help/assist here as well.

Was waiting to see this, knew some HFV member would definitely take this up here. TE already has a pretty good system of listing, so one can leverage that. My opinion is that given the HiFi gear is usually more expensive and more bulky with respect to PC parts, might we reserve it for Exclusive Classified section?

Don't understand the need of a special section. All those products come under consumer electronics and all related threads can be posted in that section as we have been doing for a long time now. Also don't understand the need of special treatment in Market section either just because some of the products might be expensive as we are already seeing GPUs worth lakhs being sold in the MP right now.

i have seen lots of overlaps in listing in both the forum. so I guess TE is natural the next pace to come for anyone who are aware of TE. rest are going to the old route.

BTW i failed to understand their reasoning - citing GST law. forum are not directly involved/ not mediator in any buy-sell. its user vs user, like like any classified section where two interested parties come together.
can someone help me understand the reason ? - if some rules applied in HFV it should affect TE as well... isn't it ?

Agree with you and by that logic Tinder and Bumble ought to come under GST too

This would not allow members to post as the Exclusive Classified section requires member to have a higher level of acces/stats.

Besides, the Exclusive Classified section is pretty dead for most old TE members, let alone newcomers.

I think it is simply business minded and nothing to do with GST. Probably they wanted to promote Hi-FiMart and the used buy/sell classified section in HiFiVision was not helping much to promote the products in Hi-Fimart.

AGreed. This is a Tech forum first off, not a marketplace. There is no need to make changes and attract members to join here just to buy and sell IMO.

Just to clarify GST Law:
1. There's no GST on the sale or purchase of second-hand items in India.
2. There is GST on Margins (If the selling price includes a margin for the platform on which the sale is being made).

I believe the mods on that forum were either misinformed or have other reasons for wanting to shut down the classifieds section.

They're still free to modify the functionalities on their website as they deem fit, however the reasons given seem at best misinformed, at worst, total and utter nonsense.

I completely agree with you on this.
It must have been loss of business to them as members were buying pre-owned instead of new from Hifi Mart. What a shame !

I can only speculate but maybe the forum owners are not familiar with GST law and they blindly trusted their CA (which if you do any business in India is never advised) and it is their lack of knowledge and information that led them to shut that section of the forum down.

GST law is pretty clear TBH, cases are plenty with people not paying their dues, falsifying input tax credits, fake invoices and of course exporters claiming back GST for exports that never took place. The Government has screwed a lot of things up but let's be real, businesses in India aren't always above board with their taxes, so case loads being high is kind of on both sides rather than just one.

I've been running a couple businesses and have taken the time to study the Act itself because I help friends with their GST queries, help other family members file their returns regularly and make sure everyone I know is in compliance. I have not found the Act itself to be confusing but rather the tax rates. I believe a single tax rate of 5% for everything makes more sense than variable tax rates based purely on the morality and whims of the GST council. Chocolates were originally taxed at 28% while Indian sweets were taxed at either 0% or 5%. Why? Because chocolate is foreign. That's some dumb logic there. If you were to tax sugar higher, sure, that might be good for the country as a whole as diabetes is a serious problem here but to tax foreign sweets vs Indian made no sense. And that's not about imports. Indian made chocolates were taxed at 28%. Now they're taxed at 18%. Still seems illogical but hey, politics and GST are based mostly on sentiment and not logic.

Likewise, staying away from the politics of it altogether as much as I can.

There are definitely issues with it's implementation but in this specific case, the CA they consulted erred on the side of unnecessary caution that took away a useful service. The rules with regards to second hand sales are clear and unless HFV had a platform fee, they had zero GST implications.
