this is the Pic hes sent me..

U r getting it for a good price. The features are also good. Note: Can the guy be trusted, because u wrote "and came across this"... If yes, then go for it.

well.. he has his advert posted on the university website here.. have his mobile no. and the police is strict here (singapore).. will check before buying...

any ideas what all can i run to check that everything is fine ?

CPU burn-in test ? (everest)

how to check the HDD / RAM (it has XP.. so no inbuilt software i guess) / Motherboard maybe ?.. etc

If you are singapore, can't you get a newer one at around Rs.35k? I mean instead of investing some odd Rs.20k on a 3 year older system isn't it better to get much better one for Rs.35k?

BTW how long do you plan to use this lappy and for what purpose? If this is just-an-extra-lappy then seems good and surely go ahead with it :)

I want a portable one.. NOT ATOM processor based one.. have one and its too weak..

well.. for 35 k.. no.. u get big and bulky laptops.. 15" ones or for 33k.. u get acer timeline 13" with pentium M.

want it as cheap as possible.. will negotiate with him..

use : presentation , internet , movies , reading.. thats it..

any laptop suggestions ? (open to ideas)

has to be light (main point of this laptop).. along with the extra battery (if older ones of any use :P)

budget 30k.. +- a few if its worth it..

based on your use and requirements, the laptop doesn meet your criteria and price also seems high :)

Try going for inspiron mini if you want small and ultra portable ones.

When Compaq notebooks with 14" display and pentium dual core are availaable for 4k-5k more, is there a need to get a second hand pentium M (which is a bull$ processor) based notebook?

Which compaq one ?

will lookup its weight and specs..

how does an athlon x2 scale up ? (price wise)

Please see that it is portable..

i dont want to carry around bulk..

Be ready to get a new battery incase you buy it..

Get an nc10, bump up the ram and enjoy, rather then getting stuck with shit that can knock off anytime without any warranty..

Dude.......Are you aware of laptop spare part costs?

A 13.3 inch dell screen costs 15,000 bucks. So is the case across most manufacturers and across all screen sizes.

Its outright foolishness (sorry for the harsh words) to buy a three year old laptop at this price, let alone buy one in the first place.

Get a 14-inch entry level laptop, it should cost you around 28-30k.

Laptop spares are hard to get and are mighty expensive. Just google the model number of this laptop suffix it with spares i.e. 'Fujitsu Lifebook S6240 Spares' and hit enter, you will clearly understand what I am saying :)

likes of compaq and lenovo will definitely have something around 22-23k which would offer you a dual core processor though not sure of a c2d. there was a vostro with a basic c2d config selling for around 26k in hot deals section some time back.
