Camera A good DSLR & a P&S

Adept
Guys suggest me a good DSLR, just sold off Canon 1100D. Thinking between Nikon D3100, D5100 & D3200.

Also need a decent P&S. So far looked at Nikon S8200, S9300. Any other option, which should I buy?

dslr u can go for nikon d3200.. or wait for the 5200 to come out in a few months .. all the new nikon cameras will be updated with the expeed 3 censor which the d3200 has.. if u wana stick to canon go for the 550d eyes closed....

Thanks, as a matter of fact I did not find Canon 1100D very user friendly. Also which of the two Nikon or Canon has cheaper & better after sales service?

Nik D3200 is expensive right now, D3100 is having some good deals & so is D5100.

Which Point & shoot camera?

@nac, & what would be the reasons for picking the D5100?

Budget for compact is 6k to 15K. Hint, I love those pop up lenses!

D3200 is an entry level dslr
D5100 is an advanced entry level dslr

It's matter of priority...

MP and processor against low light performance, articulated screen, ISO performance, Price (yeah you may find D5100 cheaper), bracketing.

Budget for compact is too wide...
PnS
IXUS 230
WX150

PnS with manual controls
P300
TZ25

Sorry OP for posting this on your thread dint wanted to start a similar one.

Guys need some help cousin wants to buy 60D and 18-135 lens in Mumbai where can she search one and what would be the best price possible for the kit.

Thanks in advance.

@Karan, you are most welcome, please suit yourself...

Im still confused between DSLR's - Nikon D3100, D5100 & Canon 550D.
Will Nikon D3100 remain an amatuer/entry level camera with with better lenses too?

Regarding P&S, no end to confusion. Its between Nikon & Canon pop out flash cameras.

D3100 is a entry level DSLR which will soon also be EOL product. It has a tiny viewfinder.
D5100 is also getting old,but it does have the current 16mp Sony sensor so the image quality is really good, but it may be replaced in 6months time .

The EOS 550d(dpreview gold award in 2010) is also very old it also has a tiny viewfinder ,its better in videos compared to nikon. It has been replaced by the 600d which in turn has been replaced by the 650D.

You can put good better lenses ,resulting in better images .but it doesn't change the fact that these are entry level bodies.

You can also consider the Sony A37 and A57 (DPreview gold award this month) it has 100 percent viewfinder the size of full frame cameras although its EVF ,its very bright compared to tiny dim and 95 percent coverage OVF of the competition from canon and nikon. Since its a SLT camera its has fast AF even at 10fps ,its can also do really fast AF in videos, better shots/charge compared to canon EOS 550D/650D.It clearly has the edge in jpeg and better in raw as well.Overall the D3100,D3200,EOS550D/650D are inferior to the Sony A37 and A57 if you consider the features, performance and image quality.

You can compare the images at dpreview and also here from imaging resource Imaging Resource "Comparometer" â„¢ Digital Camera Image Comparison Page from each camera and decide or check the direct links below.

Regarding the P&S cameras, I've shortlisted some:

NIKON:
S8200
S9100
29200
S9300

CANON
SX240HS
SX260HS

SONY
DSC HX9V
DSC HX10V
DSC HX20V

Now upto camera gurus to pick the best...

On a related note, 'Popular Photography' mag (Aug '12) rated D3200 'Excellent' in higher ISO settings and color reproduction and rated it high overall.

NIKON:
S8200 - Old and comparatively S9100 is better.
S9100 - Old
29200 - I guess it's S9200. It's a successor of S9100 and reviews are not good
S9300 - S9200+GPS is S9300, again reviews are not good.

CANON
SX240HS - Probably the best image quality you can get from a travel zoom camera. I would pick this camera among these (short listed) cameras
SX260HS - SX240HS + GPS is SX260.

SONY
DSC HX9V - I don't think you can find one. It's discontinued long ago.
DSC HX10V - A good camera
DSC HX20V - Another good travel zoom camera. If your priority is movie recording and like to have some fun features, this the best alternate to SX240/SX260.

For your information, some of the short listed cameras are out of your said budget.

Add Panasonic FZ40 to your list as well.

Too old, we have seen two generation after this.

How did you sale it? I want to sell mine. Also, does canon have an exchanging program or something?

Great. Tell me more about Canon SX 260...

Im able to get Sony DSC HX9V but HX10V is the newer version.

So what's it between SX260 & HX20V?

@Jacob, I was able to get a good price for it, considering prices have fallen drastically recently. I sold it off online.

Which website? I got mine last month. I want to add some money to get a Canon 7d

Jacob, I don't think Canon have exchange offer.
You can put your product up for sale here TE market or in jjmehta or ebay wherever you feel convenient.

teche,
HX10V is not an upgraded version of HX9V, but HX7V. HX20V is the upgraded version of HX9V.

SX240/260, TZ30 and HX20/30 are the three most popular travel zoom cameras. All the three models are good. Again its a matter of priority...

SX240/260 - You get best IQ, you may have a hack in few months...
HX20/30 - You get best video, extra frills like HDR, panaroma. But lacks priority mode (it's not a big "con" but still...)
TZ30 - You get those extra frills, priority mode, best AF in the category...
